    Hydrangea?
    Thought your garden got sun in the afternoon?
    Cornus and viburnum do okay on clay , but would need a bit of sunshine (some of the cornus kousa varieties have fab shaped flowers, albeit not particularly colourful).
    Hydrangea would tick both boxes though (and yes I do have a cutting or two!)

    It does but not the side overshadowed by the hedge. Even shady lawn seed doesn’t even try. It can be quite wet, I tried hosta but the slugs were too quick. Ferns would be good. Moss does really well there :(

    I have plenty of ferns you can have!
    There’s those Christmas rose things that would do okay, but
    I’m having a complete memory lapse as to what their proper name is. They self seed all over the garden. Dammit what are they called......
    Doh, it’s on the top of my tongue....
