Sills

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by yorkieman, Jul 19, 2012.

  1. Just replacing my sills all 3 parts both sides, does anybody have any photos which show how they fit together and how they fit to the van?

I ask because mine are a real mess, one side has only 2 pieces and no outriggers/jacking points the other has the floor support which is angled at about 10 degrees towards the rear, on top of that the sills which are fitted are tack welded on top of rusty bits of even olde sills, cannot figure out what is what or where it should go!! Argh

  2. Hello, sounds like lots of work! It's satisfying when you've done it all. Have a look at my moonraker resto thread a couple down at the mo, that shows the sills and outriggers/jacking points.

Hope you have loads of patience and elastoplast... worse to come if the old ones have been bodged.

Is your outer sill an original type or the type that incorporates th lower section of the side panel?

If you looking for an easier life get the outer sill replacement that incorporates the lower side panel repair.

Cut off the lower section of the side panel, that will geve you access to the inner sill middle section, there probably wont be that much to remove here but chop out what you can, get under the van and locat the upper [glow=red,2,300][glow=red,2,300]flange[/glow][/glow] of the inner sill and the spot welds ( if your lucky and someone hasnt fully welded them on during some "restoration") clean up the [glow=red,2,300][glow=red,2,300]flange[/glow][/glow] where its welded to the floor and try to locate the spot welds. drill out the spot welds with the proper cutter to save going right through the floor ( but seriously, the chances are the floor will be on its last legs here too, but you might be lucky) , drill out or at least waken the spot welds with the drill bit then chisel off the sill [glow=red,2,300][glow=red,2,300]flange[/glow][/glow] from the floor along its entire length, to do this you will also ned to drill out the welds where the out riggers and jack points are attached... chancs ar again that the the outer faces of the out riggers will be thin, rusty and weak, so best bet is to buy new outriggers too.. your probably going to need them...

You could end up getting into major work territory here, I done mine and found it better to rip the cargo floor out while i was at it and do a proper lasting job.

OK just re read your request and see that you dont have any outriggers ... your probably going to need the floor support extensions too, youll need to drill the spotwelds where there attached to the cargo floor, in my opionion, and its only my opinion, when these vans need inner and outer sills outriggers and extensions, there will be more, so your as well to bite the bullet and replace the ntire lower section and despite the additional time and hassle it ends up easier to work from the inside and drill out as many of the welds securing the cargo floor to the chassis floor supports, and replace the cargo floor while your at it. It makes the job cleaner, and the welding 100 times easier as you wont be welding or attempting to weld new sills and outriggers to rusty old Marmitee.... many many vans are fixed up cheep and sold on for good money as I have found out while looking for the right van at the right money, I bought a cheep van in the end, paid £800 for the van, but surprise surprise it was neding the same work as some of the vans selling for £5000/ £7500 pric range... So far im 6K in total for pretty much every panel that needed replaced, that includes the rear inner wheel tubs that usually get patched up, its neater and less hassle and provides a better finnish just to replace them entirely...

The problem is with these vans is that one thing leads to another, once there starting to go.. the rust spreads and the adjacent panel to the one your replaceing is usually thin and just about on its last legs...

The good thing is properly repaired vans sell for top money, so it pays to do the job right...

Im currently on the hunt for a couple of unmolested original rusty vans to restore... That way you know what you got at the end of the day...you also know what the cost is going to be,

I have a resto ongoing, I think its on page 4 of restorations, there is some pics with sill detail in there if it helps...
