spark plugs covered in soot

  1. Just in the process of servicing the van.

When i checked the spark plugs they were covered in soot. I have replaced them however, could this be simply be down to the fact that the van has been stood since september and only started once a fortnight to warm it up and to move it onto the drive to tinker on, it has not had a good run out.

If it is not this and is because the engine is running rich, can you let me know a remedy for it. i did try to adjust the carb (stock carb on a 1600 TP) before and thought it was ok.

    Any thoughts thanks

  2. I'm thining that if you did not run it for long before pulling the plugs out, I'd leave the carb. adjusting until you have had a chance to warm the motor up and get things toasty. I'd say the soot is just due to the chokes on for a while before shut down, etc. Ratwell site. will give you a great system for the tune up for the carb.

  3. Cold engine not up to running temperature....may well not have got past the last step of the choke.
