Stainless steel exhausts

  1. Does anybody know how the Just Kampers and VW Heritage 1600cc S/S systems compare in quality and if the manifolds and mufflers are interchangable between them?

    These ones:

I ordered the JK one a few weeks ago and got the muffler the next day but the 1-week wait for the manifold has now become a 6-week wait and I need the new exhaust before then. I'm wondering if I could just cancel the JK order, get the manifold from Heritage, who claim to have it in stock, and bung the Heritage manifold and JK muffler together. They look identical in the pics but I know that's no guarantee that they are.

  2. Have you got a 4-into-1 manifold at the moment? If yes, you could mebbe just buy the back box (the manifolds don't tend to rust through).

The JK backbox fits an EMPI manifold, with the tailpipe drooping slightly. Just a suggestion.

  3. Yeah I think it's an old Bugpack 4-into-1 that's on it just now. I've got the JK backbox already. It did cross my mind to just stick that to the current manifold but again I wasn't sure if it'd fit and if it's a good idea to stick shiny new S/S bits onto the scabby stuff that's already there.

  4. You might give it a try if you want to save a few bob. You've got the bits already.

You can't really see the manifold, and even EMPIs don't tend to rust through as they're dried by the exhaust heat. I had a JK SS box on my old EMPI for a good while, then bought the JK manifold. I'm not sure it was really worth the money, given that nobody can see the damn thing.

  5. Oh never seen one of those vintage speed jobbies before?:) looks promising however all I want is an exact repro of the original standard exhaust (and no mild steel baffles inside that rot out)!
does anyone do those? I have the 4 into 1 and muffler type setups - standard for me please?

  6. Had a proper look and you're right, Snotty, the manifold's a bit brown but pretty solid. The new silencer is a slightly different shape from the one that's on but the van's going nowhere at the minute anyway so I might as well whip the old 'un off and see how the new one lines up.

  7. I have a vintage speed sport muffler and the quality is awesome. however also check out bluebird customs. hey do a stainless replica with good feedback.

Those Vintage speed systems are great, they sound nice and not too loud - build quality looks excellent too. Trev has one fitted to his splitty, Id love one myself!
Gusbus has the Just Kampers stainless quiet pack system & Im impressed by that :)

I replaced the EMPI twin quiet pack with a JK stainless single quiet pack and the JK one sounds more interesting - lower the windows going under bridges or go through a tunnel and floor it !
Both use the same three pattern bolt holes, I suspect the angle is a bit different. The JK 4 into 1 is a larger diameter than the EMPI version - the tubes dont taper after the join with the heater J tubes. Result - a bit more power and a need to tweak the carburettor jetting slightly.

  12. Give it a go - nothing to lose! Thinking about it, bugpack may have flange in different position, but you can at least hive it a try. Firegum's ok as a gasket.

  13. I got mine from custom & commercial - S/S exhaust and 4 into 1 pipe.
Had to wait about a week for both to arrive.
Back box then arrived with incorrect fitting (instead of 90degree right angle so back back sat across the bumper, this one would have come straight out of the rear like a beetle's tail pipe!
They eventually swapped it but when you're waiting to fit it its very annoying.
I looked at VW H and JK but as I was buying heat exchangers and other bits, C&C worked out the cheapest.
I can email you photos if you wish?

  14. And it's done. Turned out to be an Empi backbox, not sure about the manifold, but either way the new one lined up beautifully and went straight on. Just need the new regulator that's due tomorrow and I can give it a test run.

  15. Yaay! Bet you don't bother buying a manifold ;)...

  16. Can I jump on this thread, rather than create a new one, as I'm also after a stainless steel exhaust, but for a type 4 1700 engine. I've looked at the Vintage Speed one and the bluebird one but both seem to make the bus louder and noisier from what I've read and I'd rather not do that as the van is noisy enough already!

I've found this one from Coolair, but its out of stock: Stainless Steel Quiet Pack

Anyone know of any other exhausts like this as I'm struggling to find any!

    Cheers

  17. Yeah I need one for a type 4 2000cc everywhere seems to be out of stock

  18. I spent less than the cost of either of the items shown yesterday on a custom built 316L grade stainless steel system for my T25.

Find yourself a custom exhaust builder its cheaper!

Also... check what grade stainless it is, 304 "stainless" still rusts... if its not 316 don't bother IMHO
