Does anyone have and more importantly want to part with a decent full working order steering box - I purchased a rebuilt one from heritage and not impressed so would love to get something better. If you have one and want to sell please let me know Cheers
Sorry can’t help but fyi I’ve just ordered a rebuilt box from N2 engineering. Heard good things about them so I thought I’d give them a try. I’ll post a review when I’ve got it fitted.
That’s great - would love to hear your review - I am stuck with my not so good one until I make it back to England after covering Spain, Portugal and France - hopefully it holds out!
I sent my box off to N2 3 years ago, and it came back looking brand new. I think now it's just a swap, but at the time, there was a shortage of core units. So I had to send my box to them to refurbish. I'd definitely recommend them. Sent from my SM-G981B using Tapatalk
I wish I would of kept my old box I replaced it and now not content - shame as could of rebuilt my original one - live and learn!
At this point I have not contacted them as I am in Italy and about to leave for Spain in 3 days so not really much can do other than make it known I am not confident in the steering box purchased. If I contact them I am sure will want me to return it for inspection but I need it on my bus currently. It was purchased via a garage and not by me personally however my brother in law owns the garage so not such an issue in getting proof of purchase
I think they'd be interested because if they're paying someone who isn't doing the job right it makes them look bad. The old Heritage took a lot of pride in their products, I'm not sure they still do to that extent but you never know. Good luck with it.
they don't list a rebuilt box on their site any more as far as i can see - maybe they stopped selling them (after complaints>!) they do still stock the brazillian lhd steering box though - labelled as "Forst" although the pics it looks identical to the TRW unit i had a few years back - they are made of cheese so please don't waste your money on one of those. Edit: just done some reading, seems ZF bought out the old TRW company and the new boxes that look identical to the old TRW units are now made by a new company Forst in china. Could be a lottery buying a new one then.. re-use of the old trw components by a new chinese co might mean quality got worse.. or maybe the ZF ownership means they are now going to make them properly? who knows. some good thread on thesama where folks have stripped down zf and trw boxes side by side.
sorry damon - they're just not very good. i found when i had mine it needed adjusting / tightening every 500 or so miles. did that maybe 10 times then it ran out of adjustment. Original vw boxes i'd expect should last 100k miles - these repros are dead at 5k miles. If you don't have the tools/ axle stands to properly adjust the box whilst you are away, you can probably still make it better than it is now if you can tighten the adjuster screw a bit? its possible to get underneath and do this without jack/stands etc
Check schofields, I got a spare one from there a while back and they seem to still be listed... 211-415-049H...
Y Yep adjusted 2 times already and loosens off again fairly quickly - I am trying not to over tighten so not to wear out box premiturely as I need to get this bus back to uk in September. Leaking oil and does not make me feel very confident.
