Steering drag arm removal

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by nightmonkey, Jun 18, 2019.

  1. I am replacing my steering box and having problems removing the steering drag arm from the box.
Ive used pullers, heat, hammers, loads of bad language (normally does the trick!) Any other suggestion?

  2. Not speaking from experience but i think they have to be pressed on / off ??

    :hattip:

  3. It has to be fitted on the bus, so i'm not sure if it'll be pressed in?

  4. Hmmm ....
Someone whose actually tackled this will be along soooon - they`re a bugger , that i do know !

    @mikedjames maybe ??

  5. Might need a hydraulic puller. Crank it up, and slap two hammers either side of the “eye”. Should explode off. It’s on a taper, so can be a beggar to get off.

I wouldn’t use heat, or you may damage the shaft seal.

  6. The short arm coming directly off the steering box ?

It will go through the chassis then you can press it off. That is what I did !

It took a hydraulic press and a lot of heat to get mine off. Finally went with a hell of a bang!

  8. Yep, forgot this. Pop the drag link off and you can remove the whole box and arm. I wouldn’t try getting it off under the van, or you’ll get a face full of exploding puller...

  9. i used a normal 3 legged puller, tightened it up, left it, came back and tightened again, did this a few times, and then whacked it with a hammer, the thing shot off with a loud bang which in turn induced some poo to come out!!

time and patience and be ballsy enough to keep tightening a 1/4 turn at a time and then whack it with a big hammer

I took it off the van and used a 10ton 3 legged hydraulic puller, cranked up as hard as I could and walked away. A hour later there was a almighty bang and I found it on the floor on the other side of the garage.

  11. When mine let go, it very nearly took out the headlight of my Golf

  12. Hydraulic puller got mine off but as others said - it comes off with a bang. Point it away from anything breakable (including yourself)

You undo the nut a couple of turns and leave it on then it doesnt cause flying pullers and drop arm when it flies off.
Mine took a good quality 6 inch three leg puller with a breaker bar on the nut. There was a big bang and the puller fell off when it went. Then I undid the nut and took it off.

  14. The box can be removed with the arm attached it will pass through the hole in chassis.
I then clamped the steering box in a vice and used the puller above. Once I'd set it up and give it
A few turns I applied some heat.. few more turn and it shot off. I was replacing the seals as they were leaking..
I'd tried the other pullers I had and even used the 2 hammer trick all that did was leave me with damage threads
    On the man shaft.
For me £9 with delivery's not bad.
    Hope this helps good luck
