Stupid question No. 101

  1. Sorry, I know I ask a lot of stupid questions, Lord Congi will vouch for that;). Anyway, here goes.......whatever is is that lines the roof of the pop top is moulting, it basically looks as though its snowing every time it gets touched so I want it out! Knowing nothing at all about pop tops, or roofs of any kind for that matter, my question is, if we have the canvas replaced would this give us the opportunity to have it re-covered?? I'm ok with the canvas really, it'll last a few more years but I really need the roof lining taking out or something put over it but obviously it's build into the roof isn't it so its not that easy to just take a few screws out, re-do and pop the screws back in!!! Would it look ridiculous if I just glued some vinyl over the top:)

Also, the previous owner has screwed a piece of wood to the roof, why do you think he's done this??? What's it hiding??

Ok, you can stop laughing at me now!!!! image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

  2. That's the Webasto or Britax sunroof, half way through being fixed!!! Nightmare!!!!!

  3. I have the same headlining all over :)
I would wait until you change the canvas and do a total refurb on the roof in one go like I'm going to do in a few years (hopefully) I wouldnt glue anyting on top - just leave and stop touching it and then it wont moult.
Looks like there might be a leak due to a split and theve reattached it ,looks like its doing alright though

  4. How much should I expect to hav to save up for a total refurb of the roof??? I wish there was something I could spray on it to stop it moulting. It's like a really fine dust!! Everytime I stand up when the roof I'd sown my head scrapes it and I look like I've turned grey!!!!! I've tried hoovering it;) seriously, didn't work though, still snowing!!!

  5. *is down* bloody auto correct again!!!!!

  6. You could paint some clear varnish over it to stop the moulting.
Note. I haven't tried this, but may work. Try a small patch first.

  7. Ive just redone my poptop liner. I bought some hardboard, cut it to shape. Bought some white foam backed vinyl and spray glued it on with edges folded over the back. Affixed new LED light and ran cable along back. Used http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360627178979?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 to glue the lined hardboard to the existing polystyrene insulation. One tin is enough.

To remove poptop on own. Undo all bolts along side and either end. Lower poptop. Lift poptop with head in centre and rotate it 45deg. Get out van and lower onto floor. Lay on back using interior cushions. Apply glue to polystyrene insulation, lower and affix new liner. Reverse to install.

Size of poptop liner found here http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/devon-eurovette-poptop-roof-lining-measurements.15664/

  8. Woahhhhhh awesome instructions thank you;) not that I could even attempt it like but still thanks all the same!! I'll be showing my other half though tonight as he's dying to have a bash at sorting it all. He's a builder, got that 'I can fix anything' state of mind;)

  9. rather than varnish you could try poly-bond as thats water based (pva glue basically) try a bit first. Do you have a pop top and a sliding sun-roof?

  10. Yep
Yep, someone fitted this Webasto/Britax sliding roof to the front above the cab. It's knackered so hubby took it apart last night in a vain attempt to re-line the inner part. It's much more complicated than I though but he says hell feckle it;). The inner lining was all torn and looked a right mess, we'll see what happens. If he can fix it it'll save us about £1800 to have a brand new one fitted. image.jpg

  11. We've also only got half of the handle so need to source a new one of these but struggling at the moment!!!

  12. That will be a nice feature when sorted. Hope the polybong works (you could water it down). If yer other half is a builder he will already have some. Not a permanent fix but will deffo stop the snow!

  13. This is basically what I did. I got the hardboard sheet from B&Q for about £8 and vinyl from Dunelm Mill for about £22 (3meters to give me plenty but if you're accurate 2 meters will just be enough)

I've replaced that light now too.

  14. As Dicky says, I would try a weak PVA type mix. Do it in this weather and it will dry in no time, put it on with a poundland foam roller. Short term bodge:) should stop it moulting ;)

  15. Nice Neptuneblue :) Looks like mine :) Tidies it all up.

  16. Yep you're right it does. Devon over did the beige carpet in the Moonrakers I think and it ended up not practical on the roof as it got dirty through people touching it to push it up etc and it soaked up moisture from cooking etc. Vinyl is easily washable and the white gives the interior a greater feeling of space.

  17. I agree to use a PVA type mix or make a new headliner and wait to refurb the pop top canvas , if you shop around ( and write lists which I do alot of) there are some good products out there for refurb of the roof's. The piece of wood ......................well campers are crafty folk into multi functions it is incase you break down then you have food for fire for a cuppa , just stored in a handy place

  18. Cant be bothered with such minor imperfections :)
