T1 1600 engine rebuild questions :)

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by D5andy, Nov 12, 2013.

  1. Started putting the engine back together - few questions from big noob that I am :)

Noticed a big gap between main three and the crank (see pic) looks at least a couple of mill.. Is that ok?
Also with split bearing does the right hand side of the case also need dowel or does the other half hold it in place?

    Thanks in advance :D

  2. Just an observation but that all looks very dry. You should have some oil on your bearings, crank etc
    :)

  3. The gap is fine, the endfloat is set by the thrust bearing. You need a dowel in both halves of the bearings.

  4. I didn't want to mess it up with oil ;) there's assembly lube everywhere it needs to be - with a liberal shower of oil scheduled for the actual joining of the halves
Ta that's good to know - should join the halves tomorrow :)

  5. What case sealer are u using, just out of curiosity ?? :)

  6. Blue hylomar :)

  7. Have you used it previously?

  8. Nope - this is a first for me, but I heard that this was the vw recommended stuff...
The previous gloop was black and had got everywhere, hopefully this stuff is a bit better

  9. Ah, good stuff. I'm in the same position as you, just about to rejoin the two halfs.
So, keep an eye on each other's questions ;)

  10. What is the thrust bearing?

  11. It's the last bearing on the right of my pic above, it has saddles where it sits on the base

  12. Take a look here Blue hylomar does not compress down enough so i've read before. I don't like posting things that can turn into a (what oil type thread ) but its quite important I think !!!

  13. Arghhh looks like I need to order some curil k2 then :( should have asked ;)
I don't know where I got the idea to use blue - must have been haynes...

  14. I think the BH is ok for waterpump fitting etc, but where bearing tolerances are concerned. It seems not

  15. Curil's the stuff to use!

  16. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

That's about the size of it. :)

  17. I have some Elring Engine Case Sealer Curil T. Any good?
