Technical Question for all you Wheel and Tyre experts !!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mi2itsdl, May 31, 2013.

  1. Currently have 175x55x15 tyres on the front of my bus. Have new 7" wide wheels going on and want to fit 195x45x15 tyres.

The overall diameter of the wheel and tyre changes by -18mm

    So.

How much do you think my bus will be lowered at the front?
Will the top of the tyres sit closer to the underside of the wheel arch, or have the same gap?

Think I know..............what do you think???

Also, do you think 205 tyres on the front will make the steering too heavy, as I could fit 205x45x15 tyres?

    :)

  2. when i drove my mates bus that had 205s, the steering was noticeably quite a bit heavier than mine,
but then again he also has quite a small steering wheel, so there was other variables..

unsure on your arch gap issue though to be honest, i havent had my bus long enough to start experimenting with that yet...

  3. if the overall diameter of the wheel and tyre changes by -18mm then your camper will go down by 9mm

it will be 9mm smaller at the top of the tyre and 9mm smaller off the bottom of the tyre

your speedo will be almost 10 MPH out at 60

Not forgetting going to low will not allow you to have the correct load rating for the vehicle
    and "could" invalidate your insurance.

  6. and it will have a horrible jiggly ride, like a thing with a horrible jiggly ride that you'll only want to go to the end of the road in.

Unless your passenger has large breasts in which case you will crash watching them.

  8. Cheers for the reply's. Not worried about load ratings, or speedo measurements, which is why I never brought it up.

Already guessed that the bus would lower by 9mm, but can't work out if my wheel will sit further up in the arch or just the same.
As mentioned by mini_bungle it will be lower by 9mm at the bottom and at the top. So does that mean if my bus is lowered by 9mm, but the top of the wheel is also lowered by 9mm, then the clearance in the arch will remain the same !!!!

Ride should remain ok, as I have had some GAZ coilovers made up to suit. I can always adjust the height of these, or change to 195x50x15 tyres.
Would prefer 195x45x15 though, as I should get a good stance with my 215x65x15 that are going on the back :)
