Timing help

type 4 engine
Put electronic ignition on. Started on 2nd call. Engine running and sounding fine.
Got my timing light out and the marks are 180 out. Not removed plug leads so they in correct order.What have I done wrong ?

 

did you remove dissy at all?

 

yes I did ......... have I put it in 180 wrong way ????

 

it shouldn't be able to go in 180 out but we did one on saturday and it did (if that makes sense) check again

 

I thought it would only go in one way ............... will try after work tomorrow

 

Clipped your timing light to lead 2 instead of lead 1?

 

ahhh - back one right side (nearest the firewall) is the one required incase you did do what paul says.

 

been there...done that...pulled the dizzy out

just back in ...... too dark to see
turned dissy 180 and engine would not fire - turned it back fired up first time !!!!!!
looks like I will try again tomorrow night

 

And you definitely had your timing light clipped to the lead for cylinder 1?

 

yep defo on 1

 

This does seem the only possible explanation.

 

Then I don't know how the timing light is flashing at BDC, as opposed to TDC

 

I will try and turn it 180 again on Thursday eve (work just gets in the way of repairs !!!!) and spend more time on it - was rushing tonight,
Will report back thursday

 

Dude, the dizzy isn't the problem... the engine is running... you've turned the dizzy once and the engine wouldn't run...

Tell me which cylinder is cylinder 1

I'm not being sarky, but I think you've confused yourself on something... engines are simple, we are over complicated in our thinking of things
