To use or not, to use?

  1. Thought that I’d got everything to do the brakes and hoses but I’ve damaged the Horse Shoe Clip. Can’t reuse the old one as it was a bolt with a drilled hole n split pin in it that had broken up anyway.
None locally near Aylesbury that I can find...
Do I take a chance or wait until I get a new one?

  2. I wouldn't. I had an early beetle where the horseshoe came apart and it caused some panic when the pin fell out. You can get by with a bolt and a nylock nut.

I had same problem .I put a pin and split pin in bought from a garage near me that had big selection of split pins ....found one that was just right thickness and length ( OOOh A Say ) ....just make sure that you don't put one in tight .
To be honest i wouldn't trust those horseshoe clips there made out of monkey metal , hence the reason it's cracked .

Use a washer before the split pin . Are you coming to T/ E Sean and Kieth's field ?

I would get a new clip. Theres nothing so nasty as being on a big roundabout when it falls off leaving the handbrake lever banging on the back of the studs and the clip alternately catching under the pads and then orbiting the drum....

Working under the assumption that because the wheel was still going round it was probably not going to stop, I drove it another mile to work, discovered the banging stopped if I left the handbrake on 3 clicks... took the handbrake lever off completely at lunch time then drove to GSF bought the clip and some new pads (in Portsmouth you dont need a handbrake between Hilsea and Eastney) ..after work rebuilt the brake in the works car park and then drove home.
