Hiya, Where would you suggest I start with tracking down a headlight problem with the following symptoms? 1. On sidelights mode = both sidelights are on as expected 2. On normal beam mode = driver-side lamp is sidelight only, passenger-side lamp is on properly 3. On high beam mode = driver-side lamp is on high beam properly, but passenger-side lamp is on sidelight only. (All bulbs checked) Cheers, Sam (T2 Bay 1973)
First thing I would do is take the headlights out of the bowls and check the wiring where it enters the bowl.
Thanks Nick - with headlamps, do you think I would find the earths local to each unit, or at the end of a loom?
Ours had drivers brighter than passenger, so as before check earths I fitted new earths, checked voltage and replaced connectors onto lamps soldering cabling and heat shrinking. Our fault turned out being although correct coloured cabling to each light one was an earth instead of 12v main beam !!!. Probably like that from new......
I asked the cat and he checked in Bentley.. If the sidelights are both on all the time they should be, then look for missing or blown or dirty fuses. And then check the wiring. Left hand dipped beam fuse 3. Right hand dipped beam fuse 4. Left hand high beam fuse 5. Also lights dashboard high beam light. Right hand high beam fuse 6. So with dipped headlamps both ends of fuses 3 and 4 should be 12 volts. And 0 Volts otherwise. And high beam both ends of fuses 5 and 6 should be 12 volts. And 0 volts otherwise. They should all be 8 amp white fuses. Get the ceramic body ones as the plastic cheap ones can get so hot in normal use the plastic melts and they fall out.
Embarrassed to think it could be as simple as fuses. Halogen bulb was blown, hence recent replacement, so it could well be a tripped fuse. Thanks - will look in daylight.
