Turbo advice required!

  1. Ok I know it's not a bay but my old mans t25 1.6 turbo diesel died last year! He had the engine rebuilt by a local garage that we trust. After a couple of months the turbo developed a whine. A remanufactured turbo was put on. After 700 miles we noticed it was leaking oil. The same garaged sent it back as faulty. Turbo seals leaking. The turbo place refused the claim and the garage paid to have it sorted. We never even had the van back. The garage refitted the turbo and said that it leaked oil bad and so it was sent back again. Finally have it back but already we have oil starting to leak again. My question is should we be seeing ANY oil at the turbo or not. I can see in 700 miles it will be as bad as before! Can't be aircooled!

  2. The turbo is oil lubricated, and water cooled... Do you know if it's a KKK or a garret??

  3. I think it a kkk. Think! It's a one owner van so it should be replaced like for like from what it came with new!

  4. Turbos don't generally break on their own their is usually another reason behind it ie lack of oil/broken oil pump etc

  5. If it's the KKK (and possibly the garret too) then there is no oil seal... the turbo vane shaft runs through 2 brass/phos bronze bushes that are drilled for oiling the shaft!!
Basically the oil flows through the turbo back into the sump, and the bearings are a low pressure oiling!!

It's going to be really hard to say where the oil would be coming from without looking at it, but there is an oil feed on a banjo or nut and cone fitting on the top of the turbo, and a flange fitting for the return on the bottom!!

If I was near(?) then I'd swing by the garage for a look... but it sounds to me that they are pretty confident that the place that the turbo came from is to blame!!

  6. It's in Worcestershire. The oil isn't peeing out Paul. But u can see a droplet on the lowest point when u park up. The turbo looks oily. So if it's got no seals do they get oily on the outside? I'm probably worrying about nothing. I will try and get a picture tomorrow.

  7. It shouldn't be getting oily on the outside... mine's oily due to the blow by on the piston rings!!

Could the garage do a compression check on it? You need a proper diesel comp gauge to do it tho, as diesels are over twice the compression of a petrol engine!!

  8. Paul did u say u have a t25 turbo diesel? I've had another look tonight and I reckon the turbo oil return pipe is at fault. The very nearly level. I've read it needs to slope to the sump? It looks to me like the pipe may have once been attached to something at a mid way point? U catch my drift? It leaves the turbo as a metal pipe. After a bout two inches changes to flexible pipe for an inch then returns to metal. Any ideas? Sorry to be a pain!

  9. I've worked on one... even changed the turbo too!!

I know more about them as the engine is the same unit as used in the mk2 golf gtd (my daily) just a few difference... sump, oil filler, inlet manifold... but other than that, they are essentially identical!! :)

On mine, it is a flat flange, held on with 2 bolts... the flange goes to a metal pipe, that has a flexi pipe crimped to it, then a union that attaches to the sump... but as our sumps are different, then the pipes will differ slightly too

I'd be tempted to have the return pipe off the turbo, and check that the flange is flat... over tightening, will cause the flange to curve as the gasket crushes... new gasket might not be the same as the old one, and could be where your leak is!! :)

  10. Oh the engine isn't installed on such an angle in a golf is it. Because of the angle the turbo oil outlet and sump inlet are pretty much on a level! I'm wondering if that's slowing oil drain and thus making it leak!

  11. nah, it won't be that... you have to remember when the engine is running, the oil level will be down by around 1l if not 1.5l

And yeah, the engine in the golf is almost upright in comparison

  12. True but should the pipe run downhill slightly on a t 25?

  13. It should follow the back of the engine down to the sump...

Have you got a pic of what yours is doing??

  14. It's saying my pictures are too big! Message me your email and I'll send u some pics!
