  1. I documented my engine build a couple of years ago, badly. It was my first ever attempt so I did a lot of back tracking and asked for a lot of help off here and thesamba.com

Since then I've stripped and rebuilt a few more engines.

I'm just about to embark on another build so thought I'd document it.
    :)

  2. Ill be following this with interest, I want to do mine this Winter.

  3. So I'm starting with this. A 1972 CB code 1700 type 4. This looks like something scared it and caused it to mess itself.

This gunk is an inch thick in places.

So this is with Phoenix right now being cleaned. Should pick it up tomorrow.

Loads of new spares, bearings etc are on order. Further update on Thursday
    :)

  4. I'm certainly no expert and learn each time I do it but I've got a 5000 miler now under my belt so i'm doing better than some of the 'professionals'
    :)

  8. Slab of beer ready .... continue(please)

  9. It will be a bit slower than that, you may want to consider getting a keg and a pump...

Anyhow, first things first, picked the skanky case up this morning.

Il Postino Pateo hasn't been with my order yet so play has stopped so far.

The plan here is to take one engine which I know is good, everything measures up well, nice heads etc but has a damaged case. PO tried to remove the fan hub and managed to break the case half in doing so.

So, I'm tearing this down, stripping, cleaning and installing new bearings. Cam is good, followers are all good. It should be a very straight forward build, I can document and show how I do it, maybe some can learn from this too, maybe some of the keener eyed experts can spot things I should be doing differently?

So the stuff arrived today, like a muppet I somehow managed to forget to buy crank seals

So, I'll make a start tearing this case down and pick them up tomorrow.

The case is stamped as WO btw but its got stock dished pistons not domed

That's what I thought, looks fine to me :)

  15. That's the damage that joker is pointing out.

  16. Some not so clever person has tried to take the seal out by hammering in a screwdriver (or the like) between the case and the seal, as opposed to just levering it out from the inside o_O

Or something along those lines!! :)

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

If you read Jokers posts above, someone was trying to remove the fan hub by using the case to pry against. As said, looks ok to me, some chemical metal to stop any leak and bob's your uncle, it's only the seal bit unless the picture isn't showing the damage.

  18. Yep. It's a crack, it shows quite well on the photo but up close you can see that it propagates about 2" along the case, which is now fubar. Whilst its possible to repair these cases its a high stress area and is nowt but a coffee table now.
    :)

  19. I would take that off your hands. Unless you need a coffee table? :)

  20. I've still got a buggered 2L if you want to practice on that @Joker :)
