Trying to remove the upper balljoint from the knuckle. LHD side came off easily with a 27mm box wrench and a sledge, RHD joint is spinning with the nut thus not loosening, and cannot fit any power tools inside the knuckle... Any ideas how to remove it? Thanks!
no mate the hub and everything is off looking at a bare knucle and torsion arms. 3 out of 4 came out so easily, got surprised by this stubborn one...
I got ours off a bare beam too. From memory I think I just pulled the joint to one side to load it which give just enough resistance to stop it spinning. That or I might’ve just got the whirly gun on it?! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I do and this would be the obvious choice but how on earth do you fit a rattle gun in there?? (not my photo)
Put a jack under the lower ball joint to load the top one. Or use a nut splitter. Or a cutting disc in an angle grinder. Or hammer and chisel. If the joint is tight in the adjusting nut a spanner on the nut might work.
Some ball joints have like a bolt head underneath the nut that you can put a small spanner on to stop it rotating ...all of mine have ...very handy
tighten it back up, wire brush and wd40 on the threads, undo again, each time you move the nut hit the back of the joint with a hammer to hold it from spinning, if you aren't re using the joints chop them off, you can also try splitting the nut
Basically like @davidoft says whack the ball joint back in place in .. and tighten it up hard. This may help break the rust on the thread. Then try undoing it. Or try using a puller or some other hardware to clamp it all together hard. Undo it get the nut off then wind the nut back on and then whack it to separate it from the arm. When all else fails, lock the nut with a pair of mole grips and use an angle grinder to slice the nut without hitting the thread. Or just sacrifice the ball joint cut off through the nut...
Got the Illegitimate child off .. (edit: LOL at that auto-correction) Pressure from jacking and prying wasn't quite enough to hold it, still spinning, same with the adjusting nut. But what finally got it was tightening it up again real tight, cleaning and lubricating the threads for the tenth time, putting a pair of mole grips on the end of the bolt and slowly trying to wiggle it loose. Took me almost an hour, had to file the bolt end straight a few times after the mole grips ate through it and slipped off, but FINALLY got it using this technique. Cheers everyone!
