    Help
Just tried to drive the van out of the garage and it won't move, handbrake is off and as I let up the clutch the front left side drops as if the brake is jammed on it's 1975 with discs !

The brakes are jammed on then. Was it wet when you last put it away?
This can normally be remedied by just pulling away which will suddenly release the brake.

This is going to sound unhelpful - but why check it every time you put it away?

I'm asking as there is nothing practical you can do about it (other than maybe not putting the handbrake on and leaving it in gear or chock the wheels when in the garage) - it's only remedied by doing exactly as Baysearcher suggests if it happens (or get a robber mobile mechanic to come and strip down the rear hub for no reason as one of my neighbours did recently).

Just trying to save you some worry and a bit of crawling around....

I never put the handbrake on when in the garage and hardly ever use it when out and about

well does the hand brake operate all the brakes, I was under the impression it was just the back one, this was definitely the front passenger side brake that
was jammed, or was it that all four are operated by the handbrake and only this one rusted on ?

The hand brake only operates the rear shoes....

    ah well its fine now

  12. Prob not, Restored, if as I assume you must have discs up front and you say same was temp.jammed/locked? I would be having a butchers at that system .handbrake temp jammed.common>front ? deffo investigate(imo)

  13. I think you'll probably find it was the left rear drum that stuck. If your front disc brake had been binding, it would have been doing it all the way home last time you used it. The way it lurches to one side would have made it seem like it was the front one. It's rear wheel drive, if the front brake jams on, then the van would have just dragged that wheel along the floor as it exited the garage because it would still have been driving with both wheels.

When you put it in the garage, chock a couple of wheels, stick it in gear and leave the handbrake off. That way it will never jam on again.

    ^What BB said.

  15. Or you could strip the rear drums and clean all the crap out, so they don't stick on.

Not using the handbrake when parked is faintly ridiculous ;)

I don't use my handbrake when its in the garage. No need.

  17. I'm not talking about not using the handbrake when parked. I'm talking about when it's in the garage. Usually when it's in the garage, it's there for an extended period of time. In the same way, If I'm going away on holiday I'll do the same thing with my car, otherwise the drums stick on at the back after 2 weeks without moving.

  18. If it's there for a while, leaving the brake off makes sense.
