Vintage speed Shifter fitting

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by TheGazman, Jun 24, 2013.

  1. Anyone had any experience fitting one ? Mechanic friend had a quick go without success although he did previously successfully fit my Empi shifter, which incidentally will be for sale! £35 One year old...

They are beautiful. The feel once fitted is amazing. Fitted one to a customers bus and though that bus is amazing, this just added to the ease of driving it.

With regards to fitting it's quite straight forward. Just allow for the reverse gear lock out plate. And make sure that the bottom nut on the rod is done up super super buggery tight.

  3. Thanks Birdy, think that was the problem, he was a bit scared of over tightening it and obviously it then just spins when trying to select. If i get stuck I might drive over and see you, your just up the road by the look of it.

They are an absolute mare if you don't tighten them up. I've had to rescue this bus once before because it came loose because like him I thought "no seriously, you can't tighten that tight!!" But you do. I also spoke to the supplier who having spoken their end recommended stud lock to be used.

I recommend anyone who has one to always keep a 13 and 15 mm spanners to hand.

Personally I love the feel and would e tempted but I'm not keen on that little nut at the bottom. And for the price, I'd have expected more. I mean what's wrong with just welding it to the base ball during manufacture??

  5. I know what you mean. I think they aren't welded so the same kit does left and right hand drive. You set it how you want it then make sure its proper tight, and yes I did use thread lock as mone came loose the first time too. Lovely now mind.

  6. Hmmm, so set it up properly first then maybe a spot weld and polish might be in order do you think?

  7. You could but mine is now solid as a rock and since I used thread lock and did it decently tight the hasn't been a problem. Having looked again at it I am sure the adjustment this feature gives you is so left and right hand shift can be accommodated from one bit of kit. You can also fine tune it to suit you.

I recently replaced all the shift rod bushes too and the change feels like a well oiled rifle bolt compared to what I started with. reasonably short throw too. bigger than a car but then the stick is longer but a joy to use.

  8. Thanks Birdy and Bertie, sounds like a Cebeebies show, for that bit of advice. We did the bushes and links when the Empi went in, and it sounds like this will work as good as it looks, so looking forward to getting it in this weekend.

  9. Was I lucky, or was I just lucky ? 15 minutes tops, just bolted it in, worked perfect 1st time with no adjustments ! Did I mention I might have been lucky ?

steveagain, Bertiebot and Birdy like this.
  10. Hi *thread hijack*

Can anyone tell me the difference between the LHD and RHD versions of this shifter? Heritage is out of stock on the LHD ones (which i need) could the RHD be modified to fit? (i can't wait, I need it now or never)

On vintage speed UK they say it's adjustable from lhd to rhd. why is heritage selling these as different items then? not same shifter?

    Thanks!

I've not noticed anything when I fitted one that would make it left of right handed.

  12. As far as i can tell it's just the direction in which the rod is slanted towards the driver. I can always cut & weld, but i'd rather not do that on a new and (not so cheap) item.

So can anyone confirm if the switchable one is a new version or if heritage is just selling them pre-adjusted for easier fitment? Thanks!

  13. The Vintage Speed one is ambidextrous in that you can fit the shifter angled however you want it (hence the need for Loctite and doing it up well. The same shifter does left and right. I can imagine other shifters may be "handed: but mine wasn't.

  14. ....... that all sounds right, although the box is stamped LHD ! So , I dont know, but pretty sure, like the Empi, it is ambywotsit.

  15. So you got it as LHD, but can turn it anyway you want? great, that's all i wanted to know, thanks!

(wonder why they sell it as two individual parts)

  16. Had another look tonight and can't see any reason why either!
