Yesterday I had to go from Chester to Glasgow for work, and due to the weather forecast elected to take the train. Coming back all was going well until we got stuck behind a freight train, and were running 19 minutes late. The guard came wandering along and having checked my ticket told me not to change at Warrington Bank Quay as I'd have missed my connection, but rather to stay on to Crewe as it would be marginally quicker. Luckily he printed me a little slip with this on, which came in handy later. Only trouble with this advice was that we went through Crewe at 90mph, as the train didn't actually stop there. The next stop was Milton Keynes. They accepted liability for this small oversight when faced with me waving printed slip at them, so we did an emergency stop at Rugby, where I got put back on a slow train to Crewe. Then got delayed outside Crewe, so missed last train to Chester, so it was a cab for me for the final leg. Arrived at my house 01:20, three and a half hours later than I should have done. What level of compensation do you think they should offer?!
Don`t be surprised if they refuse any claims due to the weather ... To be honest , if you`d have driven being 3 1/2 hours late would have been nothing Folks were stranded overnight so you had a decent result , albeit a bit frustrating ....
Joking aside, write a few angry letters, address them to Richard Branson himself. Say you’re so annoyed you’re going to go to the papers...possibly the Daily Mail included thumbsup, next thing you know they’ll be offering you all sorts as a gesture of goodwill.
I'm married with three kids - not sure I'd remember what to do with one of those. Suppose they could wash the van for me....
I've used the delay repay scheme with virgin trains east coast loads of times and they always pay up even for weather delays. Got £60 the other day due to a broken down freight train, nice little bonus when work pay for the ticket Saying that yours is a little different as it's not a straightforward one. Normally if it's 30-60 mins you get 50% of the ticket price and over 60 mins is 100%. I would write asking for a minimum of full refund (based on delay repay amounts) due to crap advice. I'm assuming west coast operate the same policy!
Send them an invoice at your hourly rate for the extra time and include a copy of the taxi receipt. Give them 30 days to pay or it doubles.
