Weber ICT 34 Needle Valve Problem

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by AndyBcountry, Jun 3, 2022.

  1. Hi. I’ve just serviced my Webber’s and have to say engine sounds great. However… took her for a spin and accelerating … no power! It’s like a limiter was fitted. So, I smelled petrol on the left carb and saw petrol leaking so I took that one off first. Bingo … the needle valve wasn’t screwed in and was a bit lose and the float valve wasn’t moving. So I fixed it and van runs fine.

Although it’s fixed, I’d actually like to know why a sticking float needle valve caused the engine to run soooo badly? Any thoughts please just so I know.

    Thanks everyone

  2. If it’s stuck open, the float bowl will overflow and the mixture will become horribly rich, like driving with the choke on all the time.

  3. Ahhh that makes perfect sense. Thanks for clarifying. I can’t believe the difference !! Thanks

Have to ask - hope you put it all together and took it for a run fairly quickly, not hours later, or you have a shutoff solenoid valve.
Because that overflowing carburettor will trickle fuel constantly down into the cylinders and past the rings into the oil if you leave it.
It can eventually empty litres of fuel into the crank case, leaving the engine in danger of damage.
It can happen overnight if the leak is fast enough. Wear on the Weber needle valves caused by vibration also causes slow leaks building up to poor running (although usually this one only shows if you have a shutoff solenoid, crank case flooding shows first otherwise.. another reason to keep checking oil level before use, and panicking when it suddenly goes up)
But if you had just put it together and spotted it, dont worry. And if you havent got a shutoff solenoid fit one. You have Weber needle valves.

  5. Cheers Mike the seat for the float valve was very lose and the float was stuck so I’m pretty sure that was the problem. I took the van out immediately and what a difference! I can’t believe I didn’t fit it properly but A lesson learned. Thanks for the advice

I’ve got Weber 34icts. After only 1000 miles after correctly fitting new needle valves and setting 6.5mm float height they dumped litres of fuel into my engine. What a mess and carry on to sort everything after that.

I set floats to 8mm and fitted a fuel solenoid cut off so sort it

  7. I set mine at 8mm too. I sorted the loss of power my fault for some reason I didn’t properly fix the float valve into the carb so it was overflowing petrol. You live and learn. Deffo looking at 123 now. Thanks for the advice
