Westfalia Jalousie Window Fly Screen restoration

  1. We are back over to the West Coast this summer from our base here in Fife. With this in mind I have been plotting this years anti-mozzy equipment. We were over there not long ago but now summer is upon on, so are the blighters. They were starting to make a nuisance of themselves at Loch Tay at the weekend so I'm being proactive!

A while back I bought a couple of flyscreens from ebay...think they were from a trader (can't think which one). They were on 'make an offer' so I did, and got the pair quite cheap.

They arrived and as described the screens themselves were knackered....

The frames were tarnished but other wise straight.

Bought some replacement screens from someone on prototype bay (I think) although it's available at various places. I also bought a fly screen 'tool' (basically a plastic roller thing) from Ebay but as it turns out, you don't need this.

Stripped the screens. Despite their age the 'piping' came out in one piece. It joins in one of the corners and just pulls out.

Polished the frames with wire wool and some chrome polish. I'd never use chrome polish an actual chrome but it does a good job here! I could have spent hours removing every blemish....but you have to keep these things in perspective! I had the wire wool in the garage (used a couple of grades and then just polish and a cloth). The polish was some ASDA own brand I picked up rather than Autosol etc.

Next I replaced the netting with the new 'flexible and not brittle' stuff. I found out doing the first one that although you think you have loads extra the piping actually takes in quite a lot of material. Make sure you start with the netting just over the 'gap' to ensure you don't end up short at the other side.

I ended up starting on a long edge and simply pushed the piping back into the gap. Like I said, I'd bought a fancy tool...but this was over kill. Ended up simply using a plastic kiddy IKEA type knife. This was much more controllable.

Worked by way round and tensioned the netting when I got to the opposite sides. Second window was (as usual) much quicker....

Both screens fitted back into the van....all set for those blighters! Now I need to modify my insulated screens somehow as I can no longer 'scrunch' them into the window....hmmmm

  2. Thanks Karl, good post. My own Jalousies are not fitted at the moment as I need some netting. Guess I better go and hunt some down now.

  3. Nice one. This is a job I have on my list - I was worried that my piping may break when it comes out and need replacing, but hopefully it will be ok like yours
