Westfalia roof - viking roof, can this be done and how?

  1. Can anyone help please. I have a rag top westfalia and was thinking of buying a Viking roof. Do i need to make the hole bigger or can i use what is already there from i gues was a westfalia roof. Also my bus is a 73 and this is comming from a 75 will it be ok.

  2. which roof? is it the earlier one with bunks or the super six with the solid beds? also what do you mean by rag top? mines a 73 westy continental originally with a super 6 roof fitted - no cutting done! i did used to have the earlier roof on but traded up as the kids got bigger

  3. I have a viking roof on my bus, it's a long story but i have re-roofed my bus with a roof with a sunroof hole, the viking top will fit fine but i've had to rework the framework for the beds etc to fit the hole, hope that makes sense

  4. Umm am not sure dicky,i braught my 73 bus and it has the westfalia interior and the roof has canvas as part of the the tin top,so a call it a rag top. So the rag top gap is from behind the front cab and is around 50inch long and on the roof tin it has marks from the front to the back were a top has bean before. So am not sure what roof it had on before sorry Am looking at a viking roof for sale on here and just seeing if it would work.

  5. That sound good to me thank you

  7. Sounds like mine tbh ie westy front hinge roof removed and rag top fitted. Id say its doable.

  8. hey vdub brvs the roof is the earlier one (with the smaller bit that comes out the side) i don't have the bunks/ beds though, they were long gone by the time i bought her there was a length of wood with an l shaped piece of metal running along them on all four sides of the roof hole. guessed they may have been something to do with the sleeping arrangements up top but could be wrong

  9. Its Possible to fit this without the bunks and fit a solid bed. I utilised the westy bed in my previous roof. Not a full bed - about 4 and bit feet long. Possible to have hinged extension so you can still stand up ok! not sure the bunks will fit unless you cut the roof tbh, probably not what you want to do.

  10. I can always get some pics of the mechanisms on mine, i have the slide out bed like dicky's, mine's still in bits so easy to see what's what

The fibreglass roof will fit no trouble, it's just getting the bed's sorted, i would say bunks wont fit with a westy roof hole

  11. some pics would be good thank you.

  12. Some pics of the frame around the hole and at the front and back

  13. Hi, I'm going to be removing one of these roofs soon... When the weather clears up. Someone else has asked me for it but they are based in Scotland or somewhere like that. Are you possibly interested? Where are you based?

  14. That would have been me. Scotland - the very idea. im after this to fit onto my friends van

  15. That would be the super6 same as mine. You finished it off yet as interested in how youve done that. Did mine in a bit of a hurry and would like to re-do it at some point soon!

  16. No mate this is as far as i've got yet
I have just re-attached what i removed so i got modify the frame to suit the sunroof hole which is quite a bit smaller that the original hole in the old roof
I still need to sort out the bases for the beds, as there are now bigger and the original chip board now longer fits, and i might change the wooden supports/slides at the ends for something more substantial
One thing i have done is to bolt it all to the roof instead of pop rivets, and i will be doing the same with the hinges as well
As i make more progress i'll update my resto thread

  17. i didnt fit the frame as I didnt see the point. I used a ply wood for the extended bed. You wont regret fitting this when youve got a double bed in the roof (and a single) People are always amazed. We usually put all the bags up there when camped, above the slider and the cab and the girls sleep in the double at the back. Takes all the clutter out of living downstairs (thats the plan anyway). Alos means you can sleep 3 and a at a pinch 4 in the roof and leave downstairs unpacked and ready for driving if its a quick stop-over.
