Westy head liner glue???

  1. Hi has anyone ever glued the white vinyl to the hard roof boards in a westy with long term success ? if so what have you used? I've already tryed with contact adhesive which i thought would be strongest but when fitted to the van its got quite a few bubbles so need re doing :(

  2. contact adhesive would be the only way IMHO

Its likely to be that you didnt get it directly on that would be the problem.....or a rubbish/cheap adhesive. Evostick is good stuff :)

could also have been a little stretched when you stuck it on and its now settled into shape?

  3. i put plenty of glue on and i had my old man watching me and tell me if i had missed any bits and i used nearly 1/2litre on each board (theres 3x as its a tintop) so it should have had a good coat? I used wickes contact adhesive and its always been good when ive used it in the past? The vinyl was new and rolled up it till just before i stuck it up so shouldnt have been stretched in any way.
I did wonder if curving the board inward while it was being glueing would have helped as it was flat when i glued it, could curving it inwards make it go slack hence bubbles ?

  4. I want to do this too! I was going to use heat resistant spray adhesive but from your experience looks like it needs to be cock on to work properly. How bad is it? Got any pics?

  5. not too bad about 5 small bubbles per panels but the vans had a 3 year full resto so its not good enough. plus its in line of sight when driving so will wind me up. from what ive read on internet best (read expensive) spray glue is only as good as contact adhesive

  6. Sounds a bit annoying considering the work thats probably gone into this.

  7. it is! plus i cant get the new interior in till the roof liners done as the boards have to be bent down to fit in j trims and the wardrobe interferes with this so jobs held up at min

  8. ahhh, that might be the problem, if you fitted the vinyl on to the board flat, then curved the board.....it could have streched the vinyl and the glue bond might have come away ........are the bubbles in the 'most curved' area?

just guessing really, but maybe gluing when the board is in place might help.....if you can get it off without damaging it......the material isnt cheap either especially if you have a large area.

did you coat both surfaces in glue?

  9. glueing it over head would be a nightmare and i wouldnt be able to tuck the edges behind the j trims down the sides. hoping it will come off without damaging it as its very close to the og material and the rest of the roll is in germany now!!! i didnt coat vinyl side as i didnt want it to bleed through and ruin the vinyl im wondering if this has made a big difference to strenght?

  10. good point about gluing it while its in place!!

I always thought that both surfaces had to be covered with contact adhesive for the best bond.....I seem to remember that being on the evostick instructions

  11. just looked on interweb at safety data sheet for wickes contact adhesive and its made by bostik so should be good quality? might have to have a try with both side stuck up if it comes back off

  12. If it's air bubbles, can't you just prick them with a sharp needle or slit with a scalpel let the air escape and, as long as the glue is still active, it should stick. Had similar problem with cockpit flooring in my boat. That stuff's 3mm thick but still bubbled in places!

That, or press them out, it's also possible to get bit of glue in through the perforations and re glue it :)

  14. Wallpaper paste - though mine is paper backed vinyl.

  15. really! what did you use as a lining?

  16. It's actually extra wide vinyl wallpaper with a basket weave finish. It's been up 6 years and is very durable. Also easy to slide into position, though I did remove all the boards from the bus.

  17. got any pics?

  19. Contact adhesive should be put on both sides with the spreader supplied then when nearly gone still tacky you should put it together,
Be careful as it hard to move when done properly then use a roller pushing from the centre to the edges to get rid of air bubbles, a litte wallpaper edge roller wold be ok, then leave some weight on it which wil be hard if your doing your headliner,

  20. My system won't let me post high def pics so you probably can't see the detail.

It's called Muraspec in the Cheviot pattern if you want to do a search. 7 metres is all you need at around £2.50/metre. I got mine from a trade decorators shop so you can view the pattern books and get it in something more flamboyant if you like.
