What carb/dizzy combo do you run?

  1. What carb/dizzy combo do you run and what is good/bad about it? I'll go first...

EMPI 34 PICT 3 carb with OE Single Vacuum Advance distributor. Seems to be bad for flat spots and pick up at low speed/revs.

    Silver Needs points/will pay!

I have Twin 40 Dells and accuspark dizzy and electronic module. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

    I'm reasonably happy with them:thumbsup:

  3. There's no reason it should be if it's set up right (apart from Empi build quality which varies)

Have you checked the Float height in the carb?
    Does the vac can work?
    Are there any manifold leaks?
Do you have inlet manifold heat risers?
When was the last time you decoked them?
These things, above all else, will produce flat spots...

Well worth doing all these jobs at the same time...buy new gaskets and good quality inlet boots...you may be pleasantly suprised

  4. I have original set up (type 4 2 litre).

Twin solexes caused some headaches but ran well in the end, original dizzy with points but removed rev limiting rotor arm

  5. Type four 2 litre running twin Dellorto DRLA 40s and a VW electronic set up from a 2 litre T25 - using only the advance can and not the retard one! Im happy with it just now as Ive not long fitted the Dells as an upgrade from a Weber DFEV progressive. Still to be set up on rolling road and could do with looking at the vaccuum (ie measuring how much draw there is
Im no expert but from what Ive read on here I would look at borrowing or getting hold of the real thing rather than the Empi as Ive read these arent fantastic. But then again as vanorak says - has it been set up?

rickyrooo1 Hanging round like a bad smell

fuel injected with accuspark vac advance with module, now it's set up right it's 10x better than before.

  7. I have a carbe and dizzy ,the carbe is grey the same colour as the dizzy ,although the dizzy has a snazzy red top....One spins as it should and one drinks a lot ,both work together in harmony...:hattip:

    philntfc and womball like this.
  8. Brocar 34pict 3 with a 123 vac dizzy, Brocars have a terrible reputation, but after a bit of fiddling to get the idle mixture right it runs great and good fuel consumption ~26mpg on a run. The 123 is miles better than the 009 I had on before, no flatspots, and the vac advance works fine, I can floor it at low revs without hesitation like it used to do on the 009

  9. What a mixed bag of combinations - just goes to show there is no hard and fast rules when it comes to these things, just whatever works for you. I wonder if anyone has done a table of some sort on the internet that shows the different combinations and performance as a result e.g. mpg etc. 26 mpg on a run sounds great @scote

  10. Original Pict3 carb, standard vac dizzy with points on a 1600 TP, after the repro 009 comitted suicide, resulting in a 10 hour recovery from Norfolk, no flat spots since putting the old dizzy back on:)

  11. Wow a 10 hour ride - look on the bright side, you saved some fuel! :)

  12. like Stevie and Macca?

  13. Mmm...I worked out that my five hour trip from Scotland averaged 29 mpg, which appears to be fantastic for a T1 engine, yet it was gutless, so I'm hoping I don't ruin the mpg after fitting the new Vac Advanced Electronic Dizzy (PowerSpark)...

  14. Let me know, I've heard they are good!

  15. Twin 40 DRLA,Bosch 009,computafire ignition,standard coil

  16. Well, its fitted, and the engine started, and ran, and warmed up, and seems fine, but I've not driven it anywhere yet, even to test if its still gutless, as I had other things to do today, but I reckon it needs some time on a colortune, and phil keeps telling me the fan belt is loose, one day at a time matey, ha.

One thing I noticed, is the ignition immobiliser, and I've no idea what make it is, seemed to prevent me from static timing, so I used my best guess, it started first time, and I waited until it was well warmed up before finding the sweet spot on dynamic timing. Also, although really grimy the coil turns out to be a Bosch, or at least a Bosch derivative as the terminals were 1 and 15 rather than neg and pos, its ancient, but the make gives me some confidence.

I have no idea what carb is on it, but suspect stock Solex, or a copy.

  17. At £54.95 I thought it worth a punt.
