What caused this, over enthusiastic torque ? Manufacturing fault ?

  1. Was grinding valves in on a head had, checked the usual places for cracks, looked good. Needs exhaust studs, but then I noticed this :(

Is this a normal place to go on a T1

Looks like it's had a whack from rocker side? Any damage that side?
First thought was over inserted rocker stud, but T1's don't have one there...

  3. Its where the nut goes that holds the head on. Its as if someone has gone mad tightening ? Never seen one damage there though before. Glad I didn't get through to many move valve grinds before I noticed. Quite lucky for me, normally I would notice as I was fitting it :D

Perhaps a poor casting then, I can't see anyone tightening it that much!... No I take that back - I just replaced the front wheel bearing on a beetle. I could barely loosen the nuts on the spindles - I make that about 80-100lbs, you certainly couldn't slide the washer unerneath it. Once the wheels were off I could barely turn the drums.
