1979 Bay looking to upgrade the engine to aid with hill climbs etc. Appreciate thoughts on new engine from likes of Heritage or rebuild of existing 1584cc with twin carbs etc????? Many thanks........
Does yours need a rebuild? Adding twin carbs does make a noticeable difference I found, but it ain't gonna set the world alight. I'd go for a rebuild over "new" if you can find someone recommended to do it.
Thanks, there's a bit of float, but generally sound. You've hit the nail on the head - who/company to use for a rebuild. Spent so much time and effort in getting her this far with the stuff I can do ie bodywork etc, be gutted if the engine rebuild was poor.....
I think it depends how quickly you want it. Generally if an engine builder is any good, they're stupidly busy.
Started searching the various forums for recommendations in my area Devon - happy to wait!! Know of one guy, but can't start until March 2017!!
We went to a 1776 with a mild cam and dual kadrons when our 1641 gave up the ghost. The case was new and had to be machined though to take the bigger barrels, as were the heads.
Flakey, is this a hell of a lot of work to upgrade other aspect apart from the engine??? Or is it a straight swap?
Jules65, has this made a noticeable difference? Been advised previously that the 1776 upgrade / rebuild would be most straightforward????
Thanks zedders, to date i've just worked on the basis that I use what I have! Would you suggest a T4 engine is a better option than a rebuilt/upgrade to a 1776cc??
Baysearcher - ok that puts a different slant on it........Not looking for a Santa Pod drag racing unit, just the ability at reasonable cost, to pass the odd the 4x4 towing a caravan in the summer months up hill!! Seems the 1776cc rebuild seems to be simplest and most cost effective solution for a few extra CC????
Before the engine upgrade I would dread going South on the M1 and going between junction 23 and junction 22. The old 1641 would slow down and struggle to do 40mph up the long incline and often I would have to move onto the hard shoulder to chug along. With the 1776 (which was built by Laurie Pettit) the van goes up the same stretch of the M1 at 60mph+ if I floor it.
1776 will go faster than a 1600, if you want to go faster than 65 You should think about a Type 4 as it is much stronger than the type 1. Sell yours and get something like this as a starting point ?? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vw-type-2...088719?hash=item33bfda540f:g:gI4AAOSwPCVX6R3A
Perfect, that's all I'm after - love driving the old bus with its 'back to basic' features, but doing 20mph in a 70mph limit is a bit warring at times!!!! I'll look into this option further. Presume you kept the existing gearbox etc etc?????
I have a type 4 2l great engine but people told me rebuild cost would be expensive and they were right, in some cases the parts are 4 times the price.
Thanks 3901mick, on balance it would seem the 1776cc out-weights the T4 option, in my case purely to save money on replacement gearbox etc. Totally get the point of the T4 being stronger, but too attached to the current bus, after so much work, to trade her in!
Same gearbox fella. Dual carburettors also add to the increase in power. Kadrons are in the camper where as they are Delortos in the bug and the Delortos are the more superior IMHO.
Robbie p, another reason to upgrade the existing for what I need......it would seem 1776cc upgrade/rebuild is favoured route....thanks for the input guys, really appreciated and echoes others I have spoken too at the odd show etc. Now to find an engine builder!!!!
