What PSi Fuel Pump

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by top banana racing, Nov 7, 2013.

  1. I feel that I should carry a spare as both of my buses have electric ones.
    What PSi is correct?
One's running Webers, the other a stock carb (which may become twin solex's shortly).

  2. No idea but i'll be watching this as I need the answers too :)

  3. It depends on who you believe:
Most Webers like high volume low pressure, so anything between 3.5 to 4.5 PSI and around 130 litres/hour should be OK.
However, there are certain companies (and owners) who swear that Webers run best with higher PSI and volume. Some US 'Specialists' recommend Carter pumps which flow almost twice this volume at around 6PSI...some will also recommend a pump on the basis of what BHP your engine is likely to produce, which in my mind is total marketing boll*cks...the float bowl needs to be full, and the seat valve needs to be strong enough to stop the float bowl from overflowing.....If your motor develops serious BHP, then you're going to empty the float bowl pretty quick, when you nail it, but sufficient pressure and volume will always prevent this from happening. Webcon have recently introduced two universal Electric pumps one puts out 2.5 to 4.5 PSI @ 130 l/h the other 5 to 9 PSI @130 l/h....Personally, I'd plump for the former.
I wouldn't be tempted to spunk a load of money on an overrated pump and regulator...it's just something else to go wrong.
To give you an idea of how informed some of these experts are, there was a very nice guy at Dubfreeze selling electric pumps, who was saying how great they were compared to anything else on the market...I asked him what the flow rate was per hour and he didn't know:rolleyes:
Also....check to see if the company quotes the power consumption in amps, and how quiet they are in use...those little square facet pumps are noisy....and the Facet copies on fleabay are worth tuppence (having tried both in the past on different vehicles)

  4. From what I've read Solex's require less PSI than Webers....so a pump with a range of 4-6 may be overkill.

  5. I'd be tempted to buy the low pressure webcon universal and try it on your stock carbbed set up...it if leaks out the float bowl gasket, save it for the Weberred bus and buy a 1.0 -2.5 for the stocker

  6. I'm a fan of the CB Performance rotary pump in the 3.5psi format (they do a 5.5psi one too)

  7. is it quiet?

I have my CB rotary wired through a fuel injection pump relay and I can hear the pump for a couple of seconds as it primes the carbs but as soon as the engine starts the pump can’t be heard.

  9. Fit a regulator and you can run what psi you want if you get the higher output pump

  10. I can understand the reasoning behind a regulator if you're experimenting with fuel delivery for an unknown set-up, but is it necessary for an engine/carb with fairly nailed on requirements? It's just a restrictor after all...the pros will probably go this route as they'll be chopping and changing according to conditions etc. but for a daily driver bus, I'd've thought you'd be better spending your money on new plugs and a day out somewhere nice:D

  11. Paul fitted one of these on my van when he did the engine rebuild. The Facet type was very noisy and also (as Paul pointed out), it's not actually waterproof! Anyway, the CB has a gentle whine when switched on that disappears under the other noise once the engine is running.

  12. I like a good whine....

  13. I moved over to the CB after the facet left me stranded at the side of the road in a particularly nasty storm late one evening!!

The facet made a tappety racket, and I'm pretty sure you could hear it when you were stationary sometimes!! But the CB pump is a soft humm that is lost once the engine is running

  14. From where cometh such an item?
eBay don't seem to have any and I'm banned from there late at night anyway.

  15. Coolair sell them

I've fitted a few CB ones. They come with a filter almost as big as the pump that they insist must be fitted or the gaurantee is void. Fair enough.
There isn't a great deal of space to fit it nicely up out of the way but can be done. However the last one I fitted only ran the first time I tried it so had to be swapped out which was a total PITA for me. When stuff like this occurs who pays? Me of course, I can't charge customer for time. Slight
