what to do with the rear roof space of a devon

  1. evening all,

....my thoughts are starting to turn to interior designs, so, I'm not sure what I should do with the rear section of my roof (devon pop top)

I'm thinking of fitting a top locker of some description, but unsure of how to finish the headlining around it if I do....or finishing off the internals of the locker in the roof area

    any suggestions most apreciated :)

Fit a full headliner and fit the locker over it, Devon screwed a piece of wood between the tailgate hinges and a couple more at the front of the locker and screwed the locker to them

  3. Mine came with a bare wood top locker, taken it out at the moment as the door kept popping open when I went over bumps. When I put it back in probably gonna wrap it in foam (ideal position for banging your head!) then whatever material I do the headlining in. Interested to see what other people have done too

  4. I'd stick with the Devon style toplocker that runs back to the tailgate: either tart yours up or use it as a template. I tried (and failed) to run headlining neatly back to the tailgate.

  5. thats one of the things I was wondering, but mine had no headlining or top locker in that area :(

......but like snotty pointed out, not sure how I'd do the headlining and get it neat, so I thought about finishig the headlining where the locker starts  .....any one got any pics of the different options?

Devons were converted and as such had the full headliner already installed and the locker fitted over it. The headliners not to hard to finish, at the rear its held in place party by the hinge covers / tailgate edge and along the windows. There's only the ft or so between the rear side windows and hinge covers that needs finishing and its simply glued to the van. Easy ;)

  7. To get "proper" looking headlining, you'd really need something supported by hoops, as in the microbuses. Not sure how well that would work, given that it's only a short run at the back.

Tricky with Devons, as they lost most of the headlining. I replaced my sidepieces with lengths of perforated h/l, much like the stuff in the cab...looks ok (also put back an interior light, VW-style). The one job I wish I'd never started is replacing the h/l covering the padded bit at the back. It's like doing a 3D jigsaw puzzle. Still dangling after two years...

If you're tempted to buy a locker, make sure it's for your Devon, with the locker right at the back, or the curve at the back will be wrong.

  8. i did my headlining and it wasn't the neatest job as i got towards the tailgate dues to the curvature of the roof, thats why i had a top locker made! :)

  9. A locker hides a multitude of sins...:)

  10. PS If you're handy with a jigsaw, there are plans for the Devon interior, including the locker, out there on t'internet somewhere...

  11. and i could get any hinge covers so it neatly hid them too :)

I fitted lining carpet to the roof then a locker up to the roof beam
