Ive been searching for a colour wiring diagram for a 74, This one seems ok http://www.bentleypublishers.com/gallery.do?code=V279&galleryId=2531 but it doesn't seem to have a lot in common with the samba one http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiringt2.php Am i missing something obvious or just been dense ?
no, not dense, the samba one is the updated version that vw use... a little harder to read, but still usable use the bentley one, will make understanding it easier!!
I used to hate the "proper" wiring diagram style ones, but I prefer them now, easier to follow believe it or not. The bus shaped ones are good in their own way though. If you can't find a bus shaped one, try cross-referencing an earlier one, the wiring hasn't changed much over the years.
As Zed said, start with an early "bus-shaped" one: once you've got your head round that, can pull off one of the later "current track" jobs for your true bus year. They all make sense eventually, and VW didn't change the wiring colours (or, indeed, the wiring) much over the years. vintagebus.com has 'em all.
The Bentley book has several diagrams. VW changed the style of the drawing in the early 70s to the current track one which spans multiple pages. Take your time reading them and it all becomes clear when you get used to the way the key is done
