Where's the timing (tdc) mark?

  1. I can't find any marks on my fan (type 4 motor)

On the furthest away edge of the pulley. There should be one mark only to be read against the timing scale.

  3. That's what I thought but I can't see it, there's no visible marks?
Please tell me it wasn't just painted on?

Anyone got a picture of it?

I have this lump sort of wedged in the outside lip of the fan but that's it, no other discernible marks. :(

The lump is a balancing weight. The mark will be quite small.

  6. Indeed it is, so small in fact that a PO's painting antics had covered it completely, tomorrow's task is to make it more substantial and then paint it white.
Then time it up, tap into the vacuum pipe for the advance mechanism and hopefully then it's happy days.
New electronic ignition distributor, new leads, new plugs, oil, filter and strainer all replaced, new air filters and I think that should be it for the year. :)
    TIME TO DRIVE IT. :D

What does that mean? You can't just grab any old vacuum signal thou knows.

  8. You can't?
    Pourquoi?
It had been fitted with a (very cheap) mechanical only dizzy. Which has now been replaced with one of those electronic ones you were talking about.
Where should I get the vacuum take off from?

From the carb. Then it can respond to the throttle position. Are they standard solex twins? If so it's on left side of left carb and someone will have blocked it off with some pipe with a screw in the end.

  10. I take it you've found the little V notch in the back edge of the pulley? (nearest to the fan shroud)

There are a few versions of the type 4 where you won't find the timing mark unless you're in the know... But this is on type 4s that weren't originally fitted to T2s.. 411/412/industrial/porsche 914

  11. That'd be the one. :)
