Whirring noise from rear wheels

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by gman4175, Oct 10, 2013.

  1. Took the van out for a drive today & noticed a whirring noise coming from the back wheels after driving for about 5 mins.

the noise got progressively louder on acceleration, braking & turning to the left.

I'm thinking the wheel bearing are knackered.

has anyone else had this problem? could it be something else?

    thanks in advance.

    cheers,

    Gus.

  2. jack the rear end up and spin the wheel.
then holding the wheel at 3 o'clock and 9...try to rock it...if there's a bit of play, the bearing needs re tightening
if no play...it could be the CV joint (s)....usually a knocking or ticking, rather than grinding noise
whirring could just be the shoes rubbing...was the wheel/drum warm to touch?

  3. thanks for getting back to us.

there was no ticking/knocking noise that i heard or made out. it was defo a loud whirring/grinding , bordering on screeching by the time i got the bus back home. wheels didn't feel particularly warm/hot when i touched them. i will jack the van up in the morning and see if there's any play in the wheels.

the only reason i'm inclined to think bearings is that i've had one go on my golf before & it sounded pretty much the same.

  6. no mate, the engine's running sweet at the moment:)

i had my head out the window & could here it coming from the rear wheel area. :(

  7. i can push the van fwd & back by hand with the hand brake off, but haven't jacked the van up & tried turning them individually yet.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

    It'll be the bearing. Ask @bernjb56 ...

My guess would be wheel bearings ;)

  11. Cheers, I'll check it out.

  12. Turns out it's not the bearings. On inspection today it appears the handbrake plate had come away, had lodged between the drum & backing plate & that was causing the noise. Seems there's no real damage apart from needing a new plate securing bolt.
