The road outside's been coned off all morning waiting for a heavy 400 ton wide load to come by, it's a generator for the new gas fired power station being built two miles up the road, one truck pulling and another pushing, nice bit of excitement on a sunday morning
They had to stop the trains on eastcoast mainline so it could come over the crossings without the barriers coming down on it
They used to shut the A34 from Stafford to Stoke and run these up whichever side of the carriageway was easiest. All the roundabouts had double gates so they could go straight on. I think they came from GEC and were bound for Liverpool docks! You gotta love watching these big machines
think this had come from Grimsby to the new power station being built near me so must've been built abroad
I don't know if this is fact of local tales, but I was told they just drove to the nearest dock and then shipped them right around the coast to wherever In the UK or abroad. This was apparently quicker than crossing the country by road and less disruptive. I wouldn't be surprised if this came from overseas as we don't seem able to compete with anyone theses days. Still...nice to have a bit of local excitement and something to watch.
If its anything like the crappy distribution equipment coming in from turkey and Egypt that they paint with emulsion paint it'll be rusty in a week but then again I had some Brit stuff delivered this week and it would have been lucky to have been state of the art in 1950!
Digressing slightly, but what happened to GEC in Stafford? Any Staffordites on here? I have fond memories of staggering through their works as a student. It was a nice shortcut after a night on the ale
