Maybe a daft question but how should this tube sit? Should the "bellend" (excuse me) on carb side of fan housing sit flush on the fan housing and stay in position? 1600tp single carb
Yes put a washer on it to stop it dropping inside. I use a cable tie at the front of the fanhousing to stop it sliding back. It should poke through the grommet in the front tinware and into the throttle cable tube in the gearbox hanger. And it should still be flat to the fanhousing after all that. Make sure that it is not too firmly fixed as if it is, it can push the outer of the cable in the gearbox housing forwards which effectively lenghens the cable so when the outer pops into place you have suddenly gained 10mm of slack .. and the bus will not go as fast any more.
They always seem to end up sticking out a bit. I put a fat cable tie around the back-of-fan-housing end of mine.
Yeah mine always stuck out towards the carb about an inch and it seemed wrong, but when I tried fixing it in the correct position I would find the ACC cable wouldn't reach through to the carb. Maybe the tube wasn't seated on the cable housing properly or something
Is it a new tube? If so it may be too long There should be a rubber grommet on the carb side of the fan housing and two rubber bungs to hold it in place on the fan intake side of the fan housing
^this. If you get the grommets (one on fan housing near carb, one in tinware over flywheel) and tube squeaky clean, the tube should stay put. I needed to tap mine in with a hammer. Also as @paradox says, if you've got a replacement tube, you'll need to saw a bit off the end so that it only sticks out about 10 - 15mm from the tinware. If it's too long, your bell-end will be cocked.
Ok so I fixed the cable tube in position so the bellend is sitting flush on the carb side of fan housing, cable ties on other side to hold it in position. Got my engine bolted in, made certain the throttle cable outer has slide over the tube. And guess what , the throttle cable will not reach the carb mechanism, it's at least an inch short. I don't think the tube had enough "spare" on the other other end to cut off and resolve this. I don't know if it's a original tube or not, it's what was always on there, but it was always sticking through Is there something else I could be missing? I don't want the tube sticking out loose towards the carb like it used to be as it seems wrong and looks crap. I will pull the engine again to check if I can cut an inch off the tube but have you any other thoughts,?
Oh and @snotty only just noticed you mentioned the tube should be held in by grommets..... Is this it https://vwheritage.mobi/GB/productDetails.cfm?iItemID=71989 Two needed, one each side of fan housing? Oh and now I notice @paradox said grommet too !
I may have some in the garage - I'll have a rummage this pm. There's also a half-oval rubber bit that goes in the back of the fan shroud. Two grommets, one in fan shroud, one in front tinware.
What a ball ache. Pulled the motor again, chopped an inch off the tube, of course then I struggled to get the motor back in. (Slipped on a treat earlier) getting dark, can't find my bloody light. Finally engine slides on, throttle cable JUST reaches now , lucky if got a couple mm to play with. Obviously something not right somewhere but fingers crossed it'll work
Is your motor in, then? You need to chop the tube so that there's about 15mm sticking out of the tinware (actually the depth of the "bell end" on the flexi). If it's too long, the flexi joins at the wrong angle and you can put a kink in the throttle cable. Did you give the cable a good tug with pliers to pull the acc pedal right up?
Yes motor is back in finally, with minimum of bolts for it to be self supported. Nothing else connected up though. Maybe it'll have to come out again..... my tube only just pokes through front tin now (like a couple of mm) I've chopped it, probably not ideal but only way I could get the cable to reach the carb. I just can't work out the source of the problem is? Sounds like lots of people have the issue
often the flexi bit doesn't slip over the tube end properly and needs a bit of wiggling under the van its a bit of a pig to get at but if it doesn't slide over the tube the cable will be to short
If it's the same cable, it must be long enough . Is the manifold holding the carb further away from the fan housing than the old one?
If the throttle cable seems too short at this stage, and you have checked all is in place, I would suggest getting a new cable - they will be in stock over at GSF in Totton for instance. I tried to use a too-short cable and I can assure you that trying to get it back in place on the hard shoulder of the M27 east bound at the top of the hill past the Hamble is not pleasant. If the end is short it tends to splay out under the clamping screw so only a couple of strands are working. If its longer, the strands further back past the clamp being twisted together hold it better. You can also solder tin the end of the cable to get it to stay in the clamp at the end.
