Thanks @Zed, I take your point about the tuning…can I ask what would you do- change it to twin carbs?
Thanks @theBusmonkey, really helpful to get a sense of urgent tasks, and things for the to do list. And thanks for the recommendation for structural appraisal and metal work.
Yes. They avoid the long inlet runners. VW fitted twin carbs to all Type-4 engines until they switched to fuel injection. A single carb is the most backward of the three choices and your particular carb is an oddity that is very difficult to tune. Simple is best and most simple to tune is probably ICTs. There is a bit more to it than slapping a pair on of course - the inlet manifolds will need connecting to your brake servo + they have a reputation for dumping fuel into the crankcase overnight so you need an ignition controlled shut off valve. Also the fuel pressure from your electric pump may need regulating. On cab steps: those plastic bits you're lifting up - they trap grit that grinds through the paint and trap moisture - if you don't fit them your steps don't rust.
You cheated. I saw so many good arches with holes under those I can't fit them now! Not to mention if you actually try and use the steps as steps you fall over backwards.
What is the cheat? Mine didn’t fit well. Glued them down with Evo-Stick using sandbags to press them to shape whilst they adhered. Hardly used and unsticking. I’m thinking seam sealer. Shouldn’t come off nor allow water or grit to get underneath.
Fair cop. It would have been rusty too Can't happen all at once @RuthieRoo . Some of these buses have taken decades to get where they are now...just a bit at a time
Hello @Razzyh ! I collected it on Wednesday ☺️ Was away on a yoga retreat since then, but had a little drive today and practiced some parallel parking on my road (with some assistance from my friend!) think am getting the hang of it a bit more- you really have to turn the steering wheel round loads eh!!!
Top tip if you've never driven a vehicle without power steering - moving, even very slowly, makes it a lot easier to turn the wheel
I use my van all year round and it’s a single carb and a left hooker ( I spend a lot of time abroad in it so was attractive for that reason) - single carb never given me any issues and the Berlin interior on that van looks incredibly tidy and my favourite layout. On the surface without a deeper inspection looks like a nice van.
