I am living in the summer of 1976. Heatwave for 2 months, no rain, trees dying, brown fields, crops failing, vegetable and fruit shortages, rivers and streams drying up, ponds and lakes drying up, strikes, inflation at 25%, mortgage at 15%, water rationing, Government advice was Save Water, bath with a friend. And use the bath water to water the garden. Good times.
Me. I’ve decided to not allow them to increase my direct debit as it currently keeps me in credit. I will submit meter readings each month as my gas smart meter doesn’t work automatically. I anticipate that I will have to make up a shortfall each month, but at least this way I will only ever pay for what I’ve used. After a few months if the additional monthly payments I’m making seem pretty consistent then I will up it only just enough to cover them. I have no intention of allowing them to build up reserves of my money in their accounts to help their cash flow. Plus they base their calculations on previous usage and I’m taking steps to make my house more energy efficient, so if I have no idea how much I’m going to use, I strongly suspect their algorithms don’t either.
On the subject of saving energy. I’ve just seen people on the tellybox talking about AirFryers and how they use 50% less power than an oven and cook faster. I don’t mind admitting I’m absolutely clueless about them. Has anyone used one? My electric oven is very power hungry and I’m thinking maybe for quick midweek meals this might be worth looking at.
Friends have one on their boat, it's amazingly good. No more soggy oven chips etc. Seems to cook just about anything and always cooks it well.
Not yet. October cap rate out this week. If latest estimates pan out (see below), I may go for the fix Ovo offered me - assuming they honour it. we’re told to expect +20% onto this in Jan Didn’t someone above have an offer of a 57p fix for electric? Seems like it might have been a good option…
This is us until October 2024 ... So, two years to either stick out heads in the sand, or re-read through and act on @Fruitcake 's DIY home solar thread ...
It’s probably worth considering that a savings scheme and putting the savings into PV and a battery. That odd little headline that did the rounds a day or so ago about discounts for people who didn’t use high energy appliances between 5pm and 8pm was odd / interesting, but suits the idea of using stored battery power rather than high priced peak mains.
Oh, go on then.... We're on day/night rate and already try to keep the night rate % as high as possible, but don't get that above 40%. Might start doing any roasts at 5am The quote on payback for "unused" electricity was £6 per kWh That can't be right ... Crazy if it is.
