SOLD 1973 Devon Caravette - £10,000

  1. We are moving abroad, so it's time for our M-reg T2 pop-top camper to find a new home. It is a factory right-hand drive model, built for the UK market and converted new by Devon with a concertina raising roof. The Type 1 1600 twin-port engine is stock, including oil-bath air cleaner, vacuum advance distributor, complete tinware. Suspension is also stock, not lowered. The mileage on the clock is 97,500, but the engine is a dealership replacement (we don't know why), so the exact mileage on this engine may be somewhat less than that.

The original Devon interior is long gone, but we fitted a full width rock and roll bed (with 3 seatbelts), new front seat covers (and pads and springs), door cards, all in blue and cream hardwearing marine vinyl, as well as sisal carpets with matching trim. The curtains are the wrong blue, but they function. There is a lift-out kitchen unit with SMEV propane hob, and an overhead locker (Evo Design) that has not been installed.

The vehicle is kept under cover, and has been run, tuned, and maintained regularly. It starts and runs well, and averages 25mpg if you take it easy.

Notable improvements and repairs include a new custom-made aluminium poptop roof which doesn't leak, new front brake rotors and calipers, all new tyres, new window seals all round. All major rust has been dealt with professionally in the last five years, including a new front panel, front doors, battery tray, rear corners, rear wheel arches, and bumpers. No underside problems. There are still things left to do to make it a more comfortable camper, but the bodywork, chassis, and mechanicals are sound.

One key for all locks and ignition, with the original leather VW fob, which is pretty cool.

    Overall, a pretty happy camper.

    Comes with a Maypole cover.

We are also selling a Khyam Sleeper driveaway awning, 2 years old, used only a few times, for £200. There's also a bunch of tools and camping things that I'd be happy to include if the offer is good.

    Funny how things change.
    Now bays are dearer here.

  3. Wow - that is cheap - you should sell it quickly - same year as ours ( it is a 1973 not a 76 as in your ad isn't it? ) and I was hoping for £12k next year and yours looks better - GLWS

  4. Unfortunately, Lisbon is even less car-friendly than London.

  5. Kinda hard to know how to price it, so I picked a number. If it goes quick, you should stick with £12k :)

  6. Oops. Yeah, thanks for the heads-up. '73 is the best year, IMO. All the mod cons of the late bay without any of the money-saving shortcuts. I love clicking that sliding door home.
