Bit of a long shot, but you never know! My gearbox is whining like a good un....was like this when I bought the van, and for all I know has been like this for years and may well continue in this state for many more.... But it's annoying! I've either got to have it rebuilt, which will mean the bus off the road for a fair while, or replace it. If anyone has a box sat in a corner doing nothing I can give it a good home! I know what these fetch, and expect to pay a fair price (I have the stick ready to bite down on...) Here's hoping.....!
They are a rare beast only available on 1800type 4 engines IIRC .. I’d get it rebuilt that way it’s a known entity
I have a 6 sat in the shed that I don't know the history of I've been going to get it checked out but not got round to it yet. It came full of oil when I drained it it was clean with no nasty bits on the plug.
My temp 6-rib was like that, it was the diff. Sounded like an old lorry. I think 1700/1800 are similar and 1700's came with a 3 rib box so I don't see why you couldn't fit one of those while you have your 5-rib fixed? In my early I had an early 3-rib, a late 3 rib, a 5-rib that turned out to sound like it was full of gravel and a 6-rib. I didn't even have to adjust the gear lever/stop plate between all the swaps so I'd just get whatever's on offer as a short term solution but I wouldn't fit a 6-rib, they're a bit longer and troublesome to fit on pre 6-rib vans as well as the gearing making it hard work for an 1800.
Thanks to Crossy2112 I may have this sorted! Just need to check the code on the box. As the engine is a 2l type4 fi I suspect it's a 6 rib.....
@The Bobdogs I might have one sitting in the corner Was going to get it rebuilt or sell after Xmas with my van and camping gear etc Let me know yours is prob a six rib.
A quick delve 'down below' reveals a gearbox code of CP and therefore a 2l 6 rib box....apologies for my error, I am but a simple plumber and unwise to the ways of machines!
Do you know the history of the box? I had one re-geared by Bears as it was short legged in 3rd and 4th with my Subaru engine. They put straight cut 3rd and 4th in - apparently the only ones with that high a ratio are for sand rail racing buggies. It was a bit whiny - I once had a Mini with a straight cut Jack Knight gearbox - now THAT was whiny - this one was just a bit louder than ordinary. I ask as its possible yours has been re-configured. I'd also get a price on a rebuild - it might be cheaper than buying an unknown one, if no one has one on here?
I did meet the owner before the last owner at Skegvegas a few weeks ago...however, I was rather 'refreshed' at the time and forgot to ask about the whining noise...I noticed it on the test drive when buying the bus, and thought I could live with it. Would be a lot nicer to use without the whining though. I have storage for the bus for winter, and it would be a good time to drop the engine and box and have a fettle...I can always get the whiny one rebuilt then sell on the replacement....
Its always a challenge buying anything second hand, unless you have a receipt or know the seller - do you rebuild yours, or possibly end up re-building the replacement?!
Many thanks to Crossy2112 for parting with his spare box! Looking forward to lying on the cold concrete floor of the lockup fitting it this winter!
