  1. As per my previous post re side window seals. I have tried and tried and tried to fit these damn seals. Probably spent around 20 hours plus a helper trying to fit these. 2 different suppliers (Schofields and Cool Air) best quality and still won’t go in. Do any of you wonderful people know anyone who would come and fit these for me. I am in Trowbridge Wiltshire. Please please help.
    Cheers
    John

Just call a local windscreen fitter if you’re that stuck!

Not that it's easy even after a few dozen, but a professional fitter won't have much trouble.

I think you’re wound up because of other threads.

I think what he Malc means, how are you trying to get these seals in, have you tried warming them up. What tools are you using.

Maybe a pic of your frames, are they original.

Was your van originally a panel van.

  5. Yeah, warming the seals, using para cord. The glass is flat and it’s a 73 Devon tintop, the openings look very factory so I’m assuming it’s not a panel van conversion, using soapy water and I’ve even tried pledge furniture polish as a lube.

We’ve done them in the field at techenders on more than one occasion!

Assume you are using the right seals, glass is the same as what came out. Any pictures of where you are having issues?

  8. Do you still have the old seals to compare?

  9. Old seals are very long gone. Been to various “restorers” before I got it. Been off the road for 15 or 20 years I think.

  11. Having issues with the glass and seals being way too tight. Looks about 10mm too tall, the sides almost fit and probably if the top went in might just fit

I think you might need to add some pictures.

Are you using the right glass?

I think I remember getting one side in first and then working along top and bottom with a top corner being last to go. I might be wrong, it’s been a while.

I have some glass you can have if you want to compare. Or remind me at the weekend and I’ll measure mine. Maybe you can do the same to compare.

Any welding around the windows? I can do it if you’re not to far away

You’ve got to get the glass and rubber a good way in to the aperture before you start pulling strings.
Quite alarming just how much bend the glass will take and you can really smack the out of it, it’s tough stuff.
    I use waxoyl as lube!

With all due respect to yours and my knuckles, just get a screen fitter in. I wrestled for a couple of weekends with most of the glass on my van, but that was with several helpers. One of my ‘helpers’ was a former screen fitter but had been out of it for a decade or two. Took all of us a good couple of hours just to do the screen. Fast forward a decade or more and I’d decided to sort some under screen rust , so while it was out I organised a laminated screen to be fitted by a proper fitter. We went to my garage, I showed him the van, he got the screen and the rubber and I asked if he’d like a Tea or a Coffee, walked down to the kitchen and got the kettle on and made him a cuppa and walked slowly Back to the garage with two cuppas and a packet of dark choccy hob nobs and as I asked him if he liked dark chocolate, he slapped the windscreen and said “Done” ,,,,,

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,Just couldn’t believe it:)

  16. The HobNobs were the secret

  17. I did weld 1 of the windows, which is still the exact same size as the others. Exactly 15 inches up. I do also need a windscreen if anyone has one

  18. I swapped my original screen for a laminated one. There's a fella in Lincoln who runs a windscreen business and was in to his VW's so he offered to do it for me when we had a meetup at his unit. He got the old screen removed and the new one fitted in under 7 minutes, impressive to watch

  19. It looks like National Windscreens have a place near me. Perhaps if I buy a windscreen from them they can fit the side glass at the same time. TBH I’d not even considered that they would fit classic vehicle glass

Just get a brand new laminated one and it’ll be much better. Ring a local glass fitter and ask them to supply and fit a new screen with rubber and pop the other glass in for you at the same time . A new laminated screen versus a donkey’s years old tatty toughened one, no contest.

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,, Thank me later.:)
