Advice on my first welding job please

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by nickyd, Apr 27, 2012.

  1. Hi everyone,

I had an MOT failure last year because of a rusty bit of chassis within 300mm of my towbar. So I took my towbar off.....

Anyway, I want to fix it now but not entirely sure how as have never done a welding repair before.

Here are a couple of pictures. Its in the rear chassis rail. Can anyone tell me how best to tackle this? Do you think its a patch job or is it a new rear valance job? If I weld a patch on how do I protect the inside of the new bit?

I have done a lot of welding before, just not on my bus, so the welding bit shouldnt be a problem, its more the process I could do with a hand with.

    Thanks

    Nick

That part started life 2mm thk, so I'd have a good clean up and judge where to go from there. You might find it easier to remove the outer valance to access better for repair and to replace you would have to. It's a cheap panel (the outer).

If Paul Weeding is reading this - do you remember the strings of chassis left supporting my tow bar? But you could jump up and down on the towball.

  4. Thanks Zed,

I was hoping to not have to start taking bits off. But I guess if the rust is too bad then thats the only way.....

Guess I shouldn't have left it to just before I need to use it to think about this!!

  7. Aha! Now that sounds better!

As long as that's not classed as a bodge ::)

Will do that, and sort at the end of the season.

Cheers guys, much appreciated as always

Work in progress, not a bodge. ;)

  9. A bodge would be

Fill with expanding foam trim flush with the kitchen bread knife and daub over with cheap thick tarry underseal

  10. I promise I won't go anywhere near the expanding foam :)
