Hello there! Right well heres the basics! Engine thats newly been put in the van (changed seals, points etc) - 1600 t/p and will not start! The starter turns it over fine, and fuel is being pumped to the carb as I can smell it/feel it. It seems like the engine is failing to spark so I've put a new coil, ht leads, sparks, rotor, dizzy cap and consender in and still nothing! Its a new battery too btw! So while all this has gone on, I went to try it today and it was doing the same, turning over etc but this time after 2/3 times at starting it the manifold rubber boot sounded like it exploded and started gushing petrol all over the tinware!(it moved just off the end of the manifold! So after a bit of squeaky bum time while petrol was running down the tinware I've unhooked the battery and decided to ask for some expert advice from you guys.... Does anyone have any ideas/can help me? I would have got a vid but after the boot blew I didnt fancy trying it again! Thanks for any help at all! Chris
basically you need 3 thing for a engine to run a spark (at the right time) have you pulled the king lead of and held it slightly away from case while someone turns it over for you while you check for a spark? if you have and your getting a spark try the same at each plug lead. then if you swapped the points did you time it up statically to the timing marks to get a basic ignition timing setting? you say your getting fuel to the carb if you look down the carb and opperate it full throttle can you see the fuel coming out the pump jet(little pipe)? if you have spark & fuel it could be mechanical (compression) but you dont say what t degree of mechanical strip down you did to the engine? to me from what you say it sounds like you have no spark or the timing is a LONG way out ie you have set the timing up with the rotor arm pointing 180 degrees out (the rotor arm should line up with the line cut in the dissy body when at tdc on no1 cylinder if the dissy drive hasnt been messed with!) or the dissy cap or leads are on the wrong way? hence the massive back fire up the inlet
Thanks! I'll do all of that now The strip down wasnt really major, new pushrod seals, rocker seals and oil pump etc and all the ancilleries Thanks
Just done all this and still nada, saw the fuel come through though and can hear some compression soo confused!
Hmm more wierd again ... used the dizzy from my brothers bug earlier and worked fine... any idea what could be the problem with my dizzy? is it likley the vac advance is pooped ?
Like zed says try the points gap. If not that then you know it is something to do with the dizzy or leads. Did you use the same leads when you changed the dizzy. What is the code on the dizzy?
is your dizzy the same as your brothers? You could have yours so far out that you won't get it to fire. When I changed mine the notch on the dizzy was 180 degrees away from the notch on my old one - that screwed my brain up for a few days... Have you tried the suggestions above? I'm sure there were 2 threads on this?
I'm going to try mine on his today! and if nothing I'm just going 009 and accuspark! ha And my dizzy wont fit that way round as the vac advance fouls on the carb manifold and wont go all the way in!
