Alternator cooling pipes

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Paul trigg, Feb 12, 2025.

  1. Here's my cooling pipe of the back of my alternator 79 van. Should these 2 small cuts be in the D ring end for some reason or has someone put them in there. They are not like cracks from ageing. Is it still OK to use. 20250212_171823.jpg 20250212_171714.jpg

I don’t know why they are there but the securing clip covers them.

I assume the cuts are there to make it easier to insert. If it still feels good and rubbery and has no perishing, I'd use it. They go hard and inflexible eventually, then I'd change it.

  4. There's no perishing but quite firm not rock hard though. Can you soak it in anything apart from hot water to soften it up.

I coat rubber bits in a bit of red rubber grease, I think it makes them last longer, which might be rubbish, just rub it in and wipe off excess. Can't do any harm and a 500gm tin is cheap enough and will last forever.

You can see the slits are moulded in. Probably makes assembly easier in the factory.

I wouldn’t (and don’t) coat it with anything. It doesn’t move once fitted and a coating is likely to cause any dust in the air to stick to it.

The rubber on the aftermarket cooling elbows are very poor ....too soft and didn't fit tightly i ended up using the old one .
Think they are ok even if a bit hard , just have to make sure it's not brittle .
