    Hi

The pipe on the offside should also be hot so that you cant touch it. It could be that it's blocked by a carbon build up.

  2. I think the heating side of things is not your problem unless you have noticeable carb icing.
It the throttle cable returning ok ? If the throttle arm dosent close properly the idle circuit in the carb won't kick in.
Seems strange that it's ok sometimes the fast idle might also be the distributor sticking in advance.

  3. When I set the carb up, I do the throttle arm screw just touching then a little more as per some instructions I read to get the few thou' opening on the butterfly. However, I would say that after rebuilding & rebushing the carb the arm is slightly stiffer in the closed position even with the spring return, If I was to let the arm snap shut from wide open i'm sure it would return fully, if I was to gently return the arm, it might not go fully home that last bit so I'll maybe check the bushes & spindle for being over tight.

On the issue of the heat risers, although maybe not a primary cause, what is the best way to clear them?
Drop the exhaust off & drill through with a cable & the risers left in place, or strip the alternator etc out of the way so the manifold can be removed? Is it easy to get the manoifold out?

  4. Obviously, there shouldn't be any stiffness in the throttle shaft. I'd start there.
