Anyone got a NAS Drive( update for the non techies)

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Rustydiver, Sep 29, 2011.

  1. Ive got a LG one so I could view my photos on the tv. Problem is I cant get the tv to talk to it, all the pc's in the house, iPad, iPod, galaxy tab can connect to it except the tv. Even my mobile phone cN talk to the tv but not the blooming NAS Drive.
It's all connected via the router all DNLA certified stuff but no joy.
The tv recognises all of my Sonos units but still no Drive then every now and the the drive appears works ok but when I switch the tvoff all is lost.

Do I need a spefic DNLA router, I'm on sky And I think you can only use theirs.

Any ideas from the techie savies out there.

    Please.

  2. Sorry I men to say the tv is a new LG DNLA certified on too.
So thought both would talk to each other, even tried it via the bluray multimeia player

  3. It seems to be that I've got to reactivate the DNLA via a pc every time i switch the tv off, to get it to come up on the tv, but still dont work all of the time.

I've read your post, as have others I would imagine - it went so far over my head it may as well have had wings and a cabin crew!

This week I have been connecting my CRT Telly to my digibox without success. And thus, the evidence of my TV knowledge is expressed in full!

Just didnt want us all looking unhelpful or rude with no replies!

  5. I've got two on my network, a 1TB and 2TB Netgear readynas.

They are 2 hard drive enclosures which I bought on a special deal which included a free 2nd hard drive. These enclosure use 2 hard drives which can be setup in different ways.

Mine is setup as something called a 'RAID 1'. This means that everything that's put onto the first hard drive is automatically mirrored on the other. If you have a hard drive failure you simply remove it (which you can do while it's running!) and put a new one in. All the data from the good drive is automatically copied over.
I like this setup because i don't have to think about backups too much. Can't really practically regularly backup up to 3 terrabytes of data any other way!
I have them setup on my network plugged into the router. I can access them with any computer on my network and externally. Got an app for my iPhone (ipeng) which also accesses the drives.
They come with built in apps, Bittorrent etc which are useful for downloading etc..

There's probably better deals out there now. All takes a bit of unravelling, but once you've got it all running you'll wonder how you did without them.

happy to help with any questions..

    Cheers

  6. Didn't want To go for a big jobbie only wanted something to put across photos for all of us to see. Got a 1TB one, can view it on laptops, pcs, iPad, phone but struggles to view on the tv. I can even access remotely.
It looks like every time I turn the tv to standby it wants to renew it's ip address when switched back on.
Nearly there just a bit more head banging.
Doesnt help my Internet connection is crap, just had a new router from sky and that's pants too, BT open reach has must fitted a new wall socket with the filter built in too, no one wants to admit there's a problem somewhere elese but that's not affecting the NAS drive.

  12. Can you fix the ip address of the tv in the router and also set it on the tv.

Sounds like it has a problem storing the info or finding the dnla, you might even find the tv is faulty so a call to the help line, (should be a number on the instructions).

Dnla is usually easy to set up and if you can see the nas from all the other pc's etc then you know it's broadcasting correctly.

Maybe as a first try, make sure the tv is on a cable rather than wireless and see if it remembers the settings etc. Sometimes these devices need to be set up initially on a wire then you can go wifi after that.

If it does fix it when on a wire but not when you try wifi then you've got a problem with the wifi, if not then is suggest something wrong with the dnla chip on the tv.

  13. Cheers MadFrankie.

I've got the tv set up through the cable, the strange thing is it picks up the Sonos system but not the NAS drive. The tv even picks up my phone ok.

Might try a bit more head scratching today. But the sun is out so might go out to play.

  18. Nice tv.

All looks good from what I can read and no one else seems to be having trouble so I'm a bit at a loss considering you can get everything else to talk to it.

I'll have some more thinking about it. Have you tried giving it a fixed ip address, is there an option to do that on the tv setup?

  19. Cheers mr MadFrankie havnt had any more chance to have a look, but fixing tne ipaddress seems the most likely thing, will try to have a look in the week.

  20. My NAS needs a fixed IP. I run mac's at home so everything finds everything okay. Except my PC which used to pick and choose when it would connect. Therefore i shoved everything on a fixed IP. This seemed to work and now the PC is always found.
