brake pad cover

  1. Just been checking my pads for wear. There's lots of life left and they work fine as far as I can tell but I had some squealing when on holiday. However there's a cover missing on one of them and I don't know how critical this is. I assume it's to deflect water off the road so I ought to have one.

Does anybody recognise this cover and where I might get one? It's a '79 model, but I think several different types of front brakes were used.

  2. Anti rattle spring plate also known as a spreader plate. As for a source they often come as part of a pad fitting kit which includes the two pins. Have a look on VWH under the heading of Brake caliper T2 Bay.

  3. I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think it's a cover as such, just a different kind of pin retaining clip.

Squealy brakes: make sure you've got the anti-squeal shims behind the pads, with a good smear of Coppaslip on the surfaces. The pad shimmying on the piston is the source of squeals.

  4. fritt beat me to it.

  5. Thanks folks. I fitted the pads about 4 years ago, but can't recall any anti squeal shims. I'll have to pull the brakes apart for a look. One thing was that the squeal was mainly driving down long mountain roads. It never happens at home.

  6. modern pads have a 3m stick on thin piece of rubber on the back of the pad and a good shamfer on the edges to stop squeel . you are missing the anti rattle spring
