Breather Box set-up

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by BarryDean, Feb 17, 2024.

  1. So have an EMPI Breather to install, watched a few video and some research, currently one of the carbs is connected. what is the best solution/set-up?

Pic attached showing set-up with fixing coming out of the top of the webbers, so do not need to connect to rocker cover?

Its weekend and time to get at it.

  2. No need for a breather box fella

pipe the oil breather to one air filter and the fuel breather to the other and your sorted

  3. So the Vapour Breather (photo attached) into one filter and the other is already connected to a filter to oil?

The breather on top of filters is overkill? No build up of oil in engine bay?

  4. Yeah that’s all you need
The vapours will be drawn into the intake and burnt so it wont fill your engine bay with oily mist.

  5. Just seen so many twin webbers with the filter on the top, but sounds like not needed. #nice

  6. Breather boxes are really only necessary on a big turbo or supercharged motors where you will encounter blow by . Factory was straight to air filter

  7. Chuck the breather box - it serves no purpose - and vent the crankcase and tank into the air filters (as VW did on the original airbox).

  8. Yeah done.

First Test run today all good so far.

A belief goes that actually some of the oil spray going back down the intake does some good reaching e.g. the intake valve guides.. actually it ends up producing a carbon cake on the valve stem.
If you are using a stock oil bath air cleaner on a centremount carburettor, it outputs a light mist of oil anyway which ends up in the intake both sides.

Or is this like the sometime F1 trick where burning the oil added some power or range to the cars?

Are they not designed more for the rail cars or dune buggy’s which reach unusual angles on the dunes? Let’s the oil run back down into the engine instead if starving it?

Don’t know , don’t know and don’t know but very very interested. I acquired one of these ‘Breather Boxes’ ,,,,,, calm down Baz,, it’s just a box.
On my 1641 with stock ignition and twin Webber 34s vintage speed stainless box.
I have a dead loss system at the moment feeding into an old water bottle and I replace that every year or so complete with the various types of gunge therein. I’ve got this box and have so far not fitted it as I’m not 100% sure how it works. I’ve bought some new air filters for my Webber 34s that have an inlet for this on the underside. Am I correct in saying that anything more than this is just piping in the breather box,,,, steady Baz,, as an exercise in decoration for the noisey cupboard? I do have an aura of film in the noisey cupboard but nothing filthy or twould mark up your sleeves on your shirt too much. My latest intention is to run a pipe off of the filler neck to a Tee piece then to each carb up under the air filters as I fit the new ones this spring and in the back of my mind I’m also thinking that this might introduce a balance ing pipe at the same time. But this may only have a positive effect if it was to the manifolds and after the carbies best efforts at playing nicely. Put me straight then peeps and I’ll devour every crumb of info on my return from the Hi Ho, I’m off now:)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,114 on the tooo doooo list :)

  13. As you say the filters have an inlet and comes with Tees that slot in, I have connected 1 x filter to the filler neck and 1 x filter to the fuel breather system.
Not had a run out as such yet, brakes etc this weekend then can have a decent test run.

  14. Chuck it in the bin.

Is there no room left over your fence?

  16. Do you have a lumpy inconsistent idle ozzy?
That’s normally the case when running two single throat carbs without a balance pipe between the manifolds

I think you fit outlets onto your head covers, then into the Empi box. The box is a breather, isn’t it? Hence my comment with rail cars and extreme angles.

  18. There's absolutely no need to "ventilate" your rocker covers.

A stock breather has a 20mm ID tube going to behind a weighted flap in the air intake, upstream of the oil bath. So the fumes are sucked out of the engine and back into the intake, but there is quite a lot of room for pulses of air flow. At the same time the spiral groove in the crank pulley is pumping fresh air in.

Many other breather systems are more restrictive so they end up needing more plumbing, plus the larger the swept volume, the more air rushes around, and the more gas blows past the larger piston rings.
So then you may need a breather update.

PS VW stopped dribbling oil on the road from draft tubes in the early 70's (meant to be a rubber one way valve on the end to keep flow out from the engine)

Thanks for all the replies. My idle is absolutely fine Para. I’m The only thing around here that’s lumpy and inconsistent.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, it actually runs really nicely.:)
