Good morning. Just returned home from a 1200 mile treck up to Aberdeen from Devon to pick up a nice Westy '73 that needs some TLC. Going through the paperwork I started to cross ref Data Plates from my Bay T2 pickup and have got to an interesting point. I think that my T2 single cab pickup is older than its reg. Could anyone offer any advise? I've called dvla and they said I would need to put everything in writing along with any info from web site forums to assist them to decide. OK, - VIN on pickup is 2642025883 and westy is 2332044819 Going on the basis that the fourth number in on both is a 2 - that suggests to me that they were both built around '72? Any help or thoughts on this would be great! Thank you. Alastair
Taken from http://www.justkampers.com/vehicles/index/info/id/3/ Bay Window chassis numbers explained The chassis number, or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), can be found stamped on an aluminum plate either behind the front seats or in the engine bay. An example chassis number might read: 229 375 250 (This number belongs to a Type 2 Microbus made in 1969)... The first digit of the chassis number, '2', indicates that this is a Type 2. The second digit of the VIN, again '2', denotes the vehicle model. Which model do you have? 1. Panel van 2. Microbus 7/9 seater 3. Kombi i.e. van with windows 4. Deluxe microbus 7/9 seater 6. Pickup 7. Crewcab The third digit of the chassis number represents the year 1968 218 000 001 > 218202251 1969 219 000 001 > 219300000 1970 210 2000 001 > 2102300000 1971 211 2000 001 > 2102300000 1972 212 2000 001 > 2102300000 1973 213 2000 001 > 2102300000 1974 214 2000 001 > 2102300000 1975 215 2000 001 > 2102300000 1976 216 2000 001 > 2102300000 1977 217 2000 001 > 2102300000 (this is the year mine was made and fits with my VIN - 227 2149 552) 1978 218 2000 001 > 2102300000 1979 219 2000 001 > 2102300000 VW T2 Bay Window - Vehicle Model History :: Just Kampers www.justkampers.com Production history and technical specs for the Volkswagen T2 ‘Bay Window’. So for yours: Pickup - 2 (Type 2), 6 (pickup), 4 (1974), 20225883 Westy - 2 (Type 2), 3 (Kombi), 3 (1973), 2044819
Thanks for the quick reply AdyF. I found a tab on the samba web site that says to use third digit for bus's upto 69. 70 onwards to use forth digit??
Not according t o Just Kampers. It fits perfectly with my VIN, otherwise it would be a 1972 which it isn't, and with your westy.
OK, thats great! Thank you. Now to update the profile ;-) Will have to try and get some photos on here soon of them both.
