Changing an internal voltage regulator on a late bay alternator

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by nickyboy, Apr 6, 2012.

  1. Hi - Am a bit new to all this and just got my 1975 van which already needs a repair!

I'm seeing lots of helpful pages about taking 55 Amp alternators out of a late bay, but it seems a bit extreme just to change the voltage regulator.

I can see the 3 screws and the alternator strap holding the coverplate on. Getting the screws off is easy enough, but the strap seems a bit of a mare.

What's the simplest way to get this thing swapped over?

    Any help greatfully appreciated!

Beginning to get the hang of all this a bit, I like to think of myself as a bit of a techie, but really I just tinker at the edges.
Got the van after upteen decades of dreaming. Underwent a 2 year resto..by someone else, not something I could do. Most of delay caused by either my finances, or unexpected suprises during strip down!

Got the RAC Relay membership today, read the John Muir book cover to cover and now ready & raring to go! ...except the voltage regulator (and a missing late bay fuel guauge which I can do without until one turns up). Yup. I'll repost in correct forum.

    Thanks again.
