Choke Disarm?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by GRINNER, Feb 23, 2012.

  1. My choke sometimes gets stuck open meaning the poor thing is revving its tits off.

I've been having a read and it would seem that the shaft can get muck up and stick open. After reading a bit more I've found that some people have "disarmed" their choke! Letting the engine warm up after starting before setting off. Anybody done this?

    ;D

  2. Ive not done it but was reading about it in the keeping your volkswagon alive book last night

Have you considerd removing it and cleaning it to see if it improves before disarming it?

  3. Easy solution: why not just clean it up (or a tap with a hammer on the end of the choke shaft may do the trick) so it works properly? Your choke's your best mate and works well - why disarm it?

John Muir recommended doing this, but he was mad :).

  4. Yeah I'm gonna clean it tomorrow on my day off, I've just been reading "how to keep you VW alive" too. Just wondered if anybody had tried it.

  7. John Muir believed that the over rich mixture when the choke was on washed all the oil off the pistons/rings and created more wear. He advocated starting the engine and rolling a "smoke" while the engine was warming up, dont know what non hand rollers are supposed to do
Others advocate driving off straight away but gentley for the first few miles, to get the engine warmed up quicker thus also claiming this creates less wear.
Muir refused to print the procedure to adjust the choke his book only how to disable it.
