The guy in Tillicoultry got my engine and gearbox removed today... sent me some pictures of fried clutch and flywheel..
Seems like clutch wasnt disengaging properly, constantly running on the springs.

I'd always backed off the screw then tightened until pedal had 1-1 1/2 inch of movement by hand so sort of baffled what could have caused such a catastrophic failure.

    That got very hot !

The only thought I had was you dont know your own strength, so it was actually the release bearing hitting maximum travel that you were feeling..
Maybe the spring on the clutch lever on the bellhousing was broken so the "finger pressure on the pedal" coming to its end stop after an inch or so was actually the point at which the pedal stopped flopping around and you could feel any springiness at all, as the throwout bearing made contact with the fingers.

I just checked .. on mine, the force needed to reach the first contact position when the throwout bearing touches the fingers is two finger pressure.

But still using two fingers pressing harder, I could easily push the pedal to the floor and because of the geometry of the lever under the pedal, it gets easier the further I pushed the pedal down .
