electric fuel pump, where?

  1. Sorry in advance if this is covered already but I'm happy to be pointed to it.
Where is the best place to site an electric fuel pump? Type 4 engine.
I always like to be able to get at things later in case of repair and it's a bit crowded where the old pump sits.

mine is under the van on the chassis leg by the filter on the nearside at the rear i guess that's where they were as standard on f.i busses?

  3. My original mechanical pump and feed to the engine bay are on the offside (right when veiwed from rear). Mine does not have FI so possibly different arrangement.

yes i agree, what i mean then i guess, is if vw fitted them under the van as standard it maybe a good idea to put them there? i dunno really i don't want to go into the least ammount of things in the engine bay that can set fire etc..... but if you're short of room in the engine bay then underneath seems good.

  5. I agre that underneath is best. Wouldn't want a faulty/leaky one pumping fuel over my engine. I'll have a go at the chassis leg. Do you mean the vertical one with holes in it level with the engine-gearbox joint? I might try fixing it there with cable ties as temporary fix.

  7. Thanks for that Rick, I'll get the wheel off and then I can drill two holes through in just the right place (if I have a long enough drill, if not I know where to get one) as It willl be safer there and easy to get at. Cheers

  8. i blocked of where the original one was with the blocking of plate you buy (should have made my own)
made a plate from 2 1/2 mm steel.
used the old fuel pump to mark and drill 2 holes on it to line up with the original bolts.
welded a peice on the back of the plate with a hole in which can be bolted the housing next to it.
i bolted the pump to the plate.
so its basically in the same place as the original!
when deciding where to put the pump i couldnt really see a good place so this i think is perfect!

  9. That's exactly where I would like mine to go. I've already put a blocking plate over the hole left by the old pump so I will make a plate to fix the new pump to in a similar way.

  10. iv just taken a couple of pics ill put them up :)

  12. Thanks for the pics. I may be having a bit of a thiko moment but I can't understand exactly where the bits are that the pics show. The second one has me completey stumped! Do you have a more general shot/wider angle?

  13. in the first pic the 2 bolts (star head) on the left are the ones where the original pump would have been.
so there is the blocking of plate and the bracket attached there.
the second pic is looking from the ground up so the bracket attaches to the clutch housing/bell housing not sure what its called ::)

  14. That helps lots. Thanks very much for the help. Will copy that idea.

Most pumps push better than pull so it is best to site it as near as poss to the fuel tank below it, if its too far away or high it will seem like you have run out of fuel when the level drops. You are possibly struggling to recognise where the pump is sited in the pic as its on an auto.

  16. I wondered about it being auto. It's all clear now
