Engine cutting out.

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by GRINNER, Nov 5, 2011.

  1. Hello,

    I think this'll be a carb thing.

My engine has started cutting out when at idol. I've not the van all that long but I've done a load of miles since buying it with out any trouble. The other night it even did it when I lifted off to change to second, but it did it very quietly without any fuss. It runs fine while driving normally its just when I lift off.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

crap in the carb? would guess it's a flow problem maybe dirty filter? got to check and clean before trying anything else, wouldn't mess with anything setting wise if it was ok before if i was you.

  3. what engine you got, 1600 air cooled i think i remmeber seeing you at bus freeze.
check your pionts and see what colour there firing at bluish ok, white flash new condensor,
sounds a bit like carb, lack of fuel, check the air box.

  4. check for hoses / pipes hanging off , around the carbs / air filter

  5. Yeah its a 1600 block with the 1800 upgrade I guess you'd call it.

I've a poke about and all seems ok. But I have taken off the pancake filter and given it a clean up, it was gupping. When thats dry i'll see what happends.

I've also read about the choke solenoid my need changing? I'm waiting for a second bod to come and listen to it click or not.

I see there's a lot of buses in Lincoln nowadays. :)
I'm thinking of moving back there myself.
Can't beat Lincolnshire folk for down to earthyness.
    The click is very obvious.

Click comes with ignition on. To test the cut-off valve, switch ig on and nip round to you 5 bar gate, then plug/unplug the wire onto it - you'll hear it click if it's working.

  10. Well i'm stumped,

Soleoid is fine, no air leaks that I can find, carb came off today and was cleaned. Put it back together and its still cutting out.

    ???

  11. You could check the choke heater is working? Are they getting hot and opening correctly or drawing a current when the ignition is on?

I'd put money on the fuel cut-off solenoid - might be worth re-wiring if this hasn't been done as it will only take 10 minutes and costs pence... or points gap?

  12. For what ever it's worth, I had a 1600 in a Ghia that dod that and we found a broken wire going to the coil. Out side was fine cooper broke inside the wire near the coil. ??? May try to wiggle the wires some while at idle!

Unscrew the idle jet, you can do it with a flat driver and blow it through, its on the drivers side just under your filter , look for any deposits, it's a 10 min job then you can discount it.

  14. Points it was!

Thanks for the help and suggestions!
